Artemis Origin and Meaning
The name Artemis is a boy's name meaning "safe; butcher".
Best known as the the Greek Goddess of the hunt and the moon, Artemis could now be considered one of the few traditionally feminine names that are currently being used for boys. Alternatively though, when pronounced ahr-TEH-mis, it is a valid Greek masculine name – a diminutive of Artemios.
Trending upwards in the US and the UK as a feminine name, Artemis has also been more quietly rising up the stats for boys since the early 2010s. Given to just shy of 100 baby boys in 2023, its mythological, historical, and Three Musketeer-ish ring might just see it catch on.
The fantasy and sci-fi book series Artemis Fowl features a male Artemis, which also might have swayed how people view this name.
