Italy
Italy Origin and Meaning
Why has it taken so long for us to discover Italy? The name, that is.
For decades, we have been using Italian place names (and those adjacent) like Rome, Roman, Milan, Milana, Capri, Florence, and Verona, but Italy itself has only been given as a name since the 1990s. This current moment feels like it could be Italy's time to shine. It conjures up images of the beautiful country, and would be an inventive way to connect a daughter to her Italian heritage.
The country may have got its name from an extinct Italic language called Oscan, borrowing the word Víteliú meaning "land of the bulls".
2023 saw Italy given to nearly 130 girls (and 5 boys), while the rarer Italia was given to nearly 80. Italus is a masculine form derived from Roman mythology, yet to be discovered.
