Twin Names: Your perfect pair?

Today’s Question of the Week concerns twin names

If you were having twins tomorrow—well, maybe not tomorrow, exactly—what would you name:

  • A girl-girl set
  • A boy-boy set
  • A girl-boy set?

Would you go the old-style twin names route and give them matching initials or names that rhyme?

Would you seek a similar feel and style?

Would you find names with related meanings?

Would you want them to be completely distinct from each other?

And don’t forget–you can now add the names of notable namesakes to any name in the database!

Juniper Helen and Penelope Maeve
Peter Simon and Helen India
Simon Connor and Oliver Donahue

I like the idea of a subtle theme — such as names that mean the same thing in different languages, or names with meanings that, taken together, mean something else, especially if it’s personal (the obscure example that came to mind is an avid skier naming their children Carys and Eira; literally, “beloved” and “snow”). But I despise the idea of forcing matchiness. Twins are no less individuals than non-twin siblings; popular pairs such as Emma and Emily make me think the parents are not treating their children and human beings, but as a matching set of playthings.

Overall I’d probably go for things that fit the same style, but they’d have to be names I loved anyway. I like things to be fairly balanced, especially for same sex twins (boy-girl twins have more stylistic leeway I think). So I wouldn’t be inclined to pair a four syllable name with a one syllable one.

GG – Eira & Awena
BG – Emrys & Gwyneira

Although having twins may not be in our future, it’s still way too much fun not to plan… just in case! I don’t like matchy matchy twinny names… it drives me up the wall. We are big travelers and huge music enthusiasts, so we want unique middle names to reflect that!

In all likelihood, I’d give them family names or names with special meaning to me. But if I was naming just for the sake of style, they’d be something like:
BB- Callum & Rhys
BG- Luca & Chiara
GG- Junia & Ariadne

If I had twins tomorrow, and got to choose their names completely on my own, I would name them:
girls – Poppy Luella & Lyra Pearl
boys – Declan Miles & Rhys Archer
girl/boy – Azura Mirabel & Finley Graham

I guess for me, I would like the names related in some way, but not matchy. My girls names would have similar styles: modern, unique first names with vintage middle names. Their initials would also be opposite, which I think is kind of cool! The boys names come from similar origins, and have the same feel to them. The girl/boy combo is similar to the girl/girl combo in style, but the names are very different.

My recent thoughts are…
G/G:Tess Margaret and Libby Catherine
B/B: Xavier (Xavy) Nolan and Douglas Benjamin
G/B: Tess Elizabeth or Elena Pearl & Xavier Benjamin or Abram (Bram) Edward

I also like the following names: Juno, Emilia, Sam, Zoe, Caroline, Lola, Louisa, Georgia, Zoe, Imogen, Gemma, Elena, Nigel, Forrest, Elliot, Theodore, Abram/Bram (love!)& then some more out there names: Temple, Temperance, Dahlia, Aster, Maple, Odile/lia, Eulalie, River & Rafferty.

BB – James Meredith and Nathaniel Rhys
BG – Milo Tobias and Sonya Louise
GG – Juniper Ann and Alys Meridian

I think I’m more style oriented than meaning, but the rhythm and cadence is also important to me. The boy girl one I’d probably play with a lot more before getting set I truly love.

Oldsienna Says:

I find that most of the names I like are a fairly similar feel and style, but I would never try to match them on purpose. My only set criteria is that they MUST have different initials.

Anna & Sophie

Louis & Helena

Louis & Roscoe or Dominic & Alistair

For twin girls or twin boys, they would be named for their great-grandmothers or great-grandfathers:
George Alfred “Geordi” & John Ernest “John Ernest”
Rhoda Lucy & Elizabeth Susan “Beth”

For one of each, they would be named for my sister and DH’s brother, with DH’s mom’s middle name and my dad’s middle name:
Benjamin Mark “Jamin” & Rebecca May

(Our older children have the other grandparents’ middle names, which are also our middle names: Peter Sidney & Hannah Jane)

If I were to name twins today, I would go for:

Clementine ‘Clio’ and Flora.

Simon and Asa.

But I suppose the problem for me is when it comes to boy/girl, since my styles for either gender are slightly different, thus making a compatible pair is difficult, but I guess I would go for:

Mabel and Winston.

They are: Leo Sebastian & Simon Ambrose. Family names, all of them.
If I were having another set, I’d use family names again:

Cecily Pandora & Cosmo Henry
Cecily Pandora & Elspeth Scarlett
Cosmo Henry & Rex Wilder

Or something like that anyway. No matchy – matchy for me!

I came across twin sisters Flora & Olive in the telegraph announcements – I think that’s an example of a really great twin set!
No way to match-y, rhyme-y tackiness, but similar style is definitely a positive, I’d say.

Hmmmm, now for the fun. Today, I might name twins:

Jasper Rafferty Kit & Milo Atticus Finn
Imogen Clover Scout & Violet Ramona Poppy
Dashiell Henry Finn & Hermione Freya Celeste (Dash & Io)

My partner and i are having twins this fall, so this topic is on my mind ceaselessly.

Though it changes day to day:
GG: June and Ramona
BB: Henry and Elliott
BG: Elliott and June – i would love to pair Henry and June, but the real life story of Henry Miller and his wife June would be an unfortunate anchor to those names.

Also, we live in brooklyn, so if we were’t on the hipster patch, we’d have little hipsters named:
GG: Dixie and Ginger
BB: Justus and Otto
BG: Barnaby and Juniper

I have a pretty high likelihood of having twins, but for some reason haven’t put much thought into this!

Boy/Girl: Flynn and Margo- something about them just works for me 🙂
Girl/Girl: Beatrix and Lulette- Trixie and Lula
Boy/Boy: Everett and Flynn

Those are off the top of my head, though. I’m not opposed to same initials, I think it can be great if the rest of the name is different. Like a poster who was considering Frederick and Felicity, gosh, I adore that. I like flipped initials a lot, too, like Flynn Montgomery and Margo Francesca. Also love the idea of similar or opposite meanings. I probably wouldn’t give one a name with a great meanings and one a name with a mediocre meaning.

Above all criteria though, it would have to be two names I truly love, more than two names that go together perfectly.

To be honest, I think the only time matchy names are cute is when it’s a boy/girl twin set. And then the names have to be cute enough to stand on their own – I taught a Devin and Kevin set, and while I loved those boys, I have to admit I internally snickered at their parents. Seriously? Was Ronald and Donald taken? Anyway –

GG – Evangeline Margaret and Magnolia Pauline (Evie and Maggie)
BG – Frederick Arthur and Evangeline Margaret (Freddie and Evie)
BB – Frederick Arthur and Ebenezer Henry (Freddie and Eben)

All of these are either nods to old Southern stories/traditions, or they are names from one or both of our family trees. My SO and I have pretty much the same naming style, so no argument from him!

As siblings to Norah, Lucy and Henry (all middle names are family names):

A girl-girl set Phoebe Helen and Greta Jewel
A boy-boy set Grady James and Milo Everett
A girl-boy set? Greta Helen and Callum James (Cal)

Would you go the old-style twin names route and give them matching initials or names that rhyme? NO (the only thing I’d consider would be initials that are opposites such as B.A. and A.B.)

Would you seek a similar feel and style? YES (this would be my top priority)

Would you find names with related meanings? Maybe…this is about as “twinsy” as I’d get. More important to me would be to give them both a family middle name.

Would you want them to be completely distinct from each other? So long as they felt right stylistically and with my other children. I’d want them to have different first initials for sure (and different from the rest of the children).

First of all, my twin names:
G/G: Eleanor Kathryn & Adelaide Jean
B/G: William (Liam) Bradley & Adelaide Jean
B/B: William (Liam) Bradley & an undecided fn with mn of James

To me, this isn’t really different from asking me what I would name any child- I don’t view twins’ names any differently than singletons, and wouldn’t want them to be matchy-matchy or clashing any more or less than any sib set.

Also, I find it interesting that hardly anyone here claims to like matching twin names, yet they are so popular. Does this mean that A) there’s more unmatchy twin sets out there than matchy ones, but they’re all so different that it’s the matchy ones that make the most popular list B) people don’t plan on the matchy ones but change their minds C) people who like matchy ones are embarrassed to post since that doesn’t seem to be the most popular here or perhaps D) the nameberry subset of people just has a different opinion than the majority of people??

klcalder2 Says:

June 1st, 2011 at 5:19 pm

For Emily: I would say it’s a mix of A and D. I imagine there are a large number of twins born these days with fertility drugs and what not. So, the number of combinations for twin’s names is most likely very vast and the top sets only go to 50 or so pairs of twins. I agree with you in saying that really your twin’s names should flow well but not so matchy matchy. The names should fit into a sibset whether they’re given to twins or not.

If I had to name a set of twins right now, I think they would be:
B/B: Asher Josiah and Theodore Everett

Imagine what it would be like for a “Billy and Jilly”!

Twins run in my family, skipping a generation… and it’s on my generation! My first cousin has already had a set of twins, so I’m hoping that I do, too. Because of that, I’ve been thinking about names for twins lately…

BB: Robert Edmund (“Rex”) and Leonardo Gentry (“Leo”)
BG: Robert Edmund (“Rex”) and Cecilia Grace (“Cici”)
GG: AnnaClaire and Chloe Mae

I like the idea of have girls who go by a first and middle name… My grandmother always calls me “Laura Ann”. I think it’s a southern tradition that I want for my girls! 🙂

Charlotte Vera Says:

The names would have to go well with our existent children’s names and mean something to us. Since Roseanna and Alaric were named for my husband’s side of the family, I’d want to choose names that honour my own family. I only know what I’d choose if I had two girls.

GG: Guinevere and Hannelore (after my mother, father, and grandmother)

As a twin I am so freaking thankful that my parents didn’t give us matching names. As close as we are, there was never a need to link us anymore than we were already linked. As a twin you get all kinds of stupid annoying questions and people treating you like a freaking novelty- having themed names would just be the cherry on the annoying top. “Oh you’re names are Audrey and Aubrey! How cute!”. “Oh Lilly and Rose! Both flowers! “Alexis and Alexander! Do you both go by Alex?” Okay, so I’m being a little extreme, but sometimes it gets really annoying being treated like a novelty (it doesn’t help that we both have red hair either- Another novelty!) I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me what it’s like being a twin. I couldn’t tell you. I’ve never know anything different. What’s it like being a singleton? My health teacher asked me if my brother and I shared a placenta? I mean seriously? Like I would know! I think the novelty of matching names would wear off really quickly… but that’s just me. I mean, if you wouldn’t name siblings that are 3 years apart with the same first letter or theme, then don’t do it to the twins. I mean, the other siblings already feel left out of this little club called twindom. My older brother always felt like we were teaming up on him to get him in trouble. Twins already have their own little club, stop giving them more reasons to seclude into their twin world! As you can tell, I also dislike when people dress their twins in the same outfit – especially when their identical, like it’s not hard enough to tell them a part.

Anyway, on that note, I LOVE dotsmom ‘s names. I think a little subtle connection like the V in the names is great! I don’t mind the subtle.

I honestly just think that twins have enough special connections between them. I know a set of twins that have been raised as twins instead of 2 children, and it’s crazy! Because they always think as a ‘we’. And it’s not like they are the same person either. They are total opposites but they only know how to be a ‘we’. It’s always both of them or neither of them.

Anyway, My twin and I are:
Cailin Marie
Alex Donald.

I dare you to find a theme or pattern in those names.

I’ve considered a lot of twin names (especially girls) because my mom is a twin and her mom is a twin. Their names are absolutely horrid though! Mom and her twin are Sharen Kay and Karen Fay and my grandma and her twin are Velma Kay and Thelma Gay! I would NEVER do something like this to my children!

The most matchy I would get for girls would be Lena Sterling (meaning “bright little star”) and Sybil Lucille (meaning “prophetess of light”).
I also like August Olivia and Phoenix Elizabeth for a girl pair.
Boys I would do Ransom Cane and Conrad Wolfe. R.C. is my father in-law’s initials and C.W. is my dad’s. Ransom is a family name. Cane is the name of a creek near where I grew up. Conrad I just love and Wolfe is family last name.
Boy/Girl is probably the hardest for me. I might actually be inclined to get a little more matchy if I had a B/G twin set. Maybe Lena Sterling and Lawson Spencer. I like August Olivia and Ransom Charles too though.
I hope I have twins one day so I can carry on the family tradition. 🙂

Laura, I love Rafferty and Lennox together, and Lyndsay, Everett and Flynn are perfect for you, especially with Dashiell! I love that.

As a twin, I pretty much despise matched names. But, subtle themes are A-okay. Today, I guess I’d go with Eliza and Charlotte for girls; something like Eliza and Nathaniel, Charlotte and Toby, Eliza and Reid, or Toby and Grace for girl-boy twins; and maybe Nathaniel and Reid, Nathaniel and Toby, Toby and Reid, Nathaniel and Jude, or Parker and Grant for boys. Wow, that was all over the place…

The twins in my family are Lauren (me) and Sarah, Esther (my maternal great-grandma) and Lester, Gary and Larry (mom’s cousins), and Jonathan Lewis (paternal great-great grandpa) and Boyd Sevier.

I grew up in an era where twins’ names went together, not necessarily matchy matchy, so it’s hard for me to reconcile myself to twins’ names that don’t sound like twins’ names. I remember sets like Jan and Jamie (both girls) or Holly and Heidi. Given the choices other posters have listed above, it seems the trend is not to sound like twins at all. It’s better than automatic rhyming!

I am having twins… not tomorrow, but in 3-4 months. They are both boys. Though we haven’t named them yet, we agree there will be no rhyming, same first letter, matchy names. We have talked about complimentary and/or similar meanings. We have also joked about naming them Icarus and Bob. So… we want names that have similar weight and feeling but DO NOT match in some way. I agree with those who have said twins are two separate people, not one package.

I frequent this site often, but I’ve only decided today to finally create and account. I look up names and read articles frequently, but now I’m an official welcome. So, November 1st is now my Nameberry anniversary date. 😉 I’m seventeen, so, I’m not planning on having kids anytime soon, but I am name!crazy and name!obsessed. I always like to talk about them, find trivial patterns by connecting names, and I love themes. I usually only give themes to fictional characters because I’m not bold enough to name my daughter Sparrow, or Wren, or name my son Walker, Wheeler, or Winchester (I love referring to boys by their last names, so last-names-as-a-first-name is a trend for boys that I adore.) I also can’t bring myself to name a girl Calypso, even though Cal would be a bold nickname for her; Caleigh would suffice, maybe. Also, I’m obsessed with making sure that any first name I’ve chosen gets a middle name. ANYWAY…

If I had twins right now, I would name them:
GG – Ria Elizabeth & Raine Adele
BB – Seth Adam & Parker James
GB – Jezebel Alexis & Kellin James

Yes, I know that Jezebel is often thought of as, well, a… certain type of woman, but I’m not religious at all, and I fell in love with using “Jez” as a nickname after reading a Night World book by L.J. Smith. I love her books, and she gets away with giving all of her characters amazing names because they’re supernatural. Also, James is the name of another character from L.J.’s universe. I guess that Jezebel and James would be a nod to her.

You can see my list of names (that I’ve written down as of now) here:

I adore same-initial pairs for twins- not so much for other multiples. My picks:

Darcy & Dwight
Domenic & Dante
Zoltan & Zachary

Amy & Alexandra
Natalia & Noelle
Kiley & Killian
Holly & Harper

Valerian (M) and Veritas (F)
Arron (M) and Amy (F)
Erik (M) and Eden (F)
Patrick (M) & Persephone (F)
Yannick (M) and Yeva (F)
Lucius (M) and Lilith (F)
Corvus (M) and Cassandra (F)

I lean towards names with roots in the dark/Gothic/mythological, so forgive me for some of the more obscure choices here. I like unique names, but not ones so outlandish that they would ostracize my (future) kids from his/her peers.

I’ve already used two of these pairs for characters (not sure what my sig. other would have to say about them, since we totally disagree on names), and I’ll probably test-drive the rest in the realm of fiction before trying them out on a human being. 🙂
