Leia Origin and Meaning
The name Leia is a girl's name of Hindi origin meaning "weary; the law; dissolution".
Most familiar in the English speaking world as the Star Wars princess, Jedi, and leader, Leia can be considered a pop culture choice, created by George Lucas who in turn likely based it on the Biblical Leah. It has been in the US Top 1000 since the mid-2000s and is also a popular choice in the UK and Sweden.
The spelling coincides with a Portuguese and Brazilian variant of Leah, in which case it would be pronounced "LEE-uh". Alternatively, it might be an alternative spelling of Laya, a Sanskrit name relating to the Lord Shiva, or a Spanish name, based on the word ley meaning "law".
