The only thing I hear is melon-y, as in someone who resembles a melon.

Hero_Phoebus Says:

My mother is Melanie and her name suits her very well.. I never knew that Melanie was a Greek name, so that's interesting - especially as many of my favourite names are Greek or inspired by Greek gods and goddesses.

Rasha Says:

Melanie Martinez ruined this name for me, but I don't understand why the meaning is so bad to people. Black is a color, nobody thinks Scarlet is off-putting because it is a shade of red. Yes, there are some negative connections with the color black. However, every color has both negative and positive connections. Such as red, which can be the color of love or the color of anger. Black can be positive, just like the other colors. Think of the earth, the soil you walk upon. Think of the color of some very friendly and loving animals. Think of chocolate. Think of the color of the sky on a beautifully happy and impactful night. Think of the hair or skin color of someone influential, that you look up to and love. Think of the deep water of a lake. Think of velvet, truffles, a blackbird singing in the dead of night, some musical instruments, coffee, licorice. Dark colors are warm and sweet. There is nothing wrong with the color black. It doesn't make anything less of value.

Mel names were overused for so long, but I still love Melanie and Melissa. Melanie is my current favourite of the two. The character from "Gone WIth The Wind" is definitely a positive association for me. The best names from that novel and movie, for me, are Tara (the plantation), Melanie and Cathleen. I'm not a huge fan of Scarlett as a name.

BrittanyBrown Says:

Any relationship to "melanin" as in dark pigmented skin? Everyone is so scared of the meaning "black or dark" as in evil or scary yet it could just be a hair color or skin color. Or heck, what's wrong with the color black or darkness of things? People get so sensitive and negative about meanings. Balance people!
