Beckett Origin and Meaning

The name Beckett is a boy's name of English origin meaning "bee hive, little brook or bee cottage".

Beckett is one of the big baby name hits of the decade.

A handsome name with an attractively brisk sound, and rich in literary associations via major Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, it is especially hot among celebs. Melissa Etheridge jump-started the trend in 1998, followed by Conan O'Brien, Stella McCartney, Malcolm McDowell, Nicole Sullivan and Natalie Maines.

Another worthy namesake is the martyred saint Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, whose story was the basis of the Anouilh play "Becket," which became a film starring Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.

In 2005, the authors of Freakonomics predicted that Beckett would be one of the most popular baby names of 2015. Although they were a little off the mark -- Beckett hasn't even cracked the Top 100 -- we predict that it will continue to climb the US rankings.

i’m not a fan of it’s pronunciation, but it is cute on a child and suitable for an adult. I do love the meaning “bee cottage” and Samuel Beckett.

We named our second son Beckett, and the name seems to fit his personality. He has a brother Ethan and cousins Ian and Owen, so we needed something different from that. We have not had any issues with anyone understanding it. In fact, there is another Beckett in our eldest son's class! We have also run into 2 other Becketts. The nickname of choice from friends and family seems to be "Becks", which works fine for us. It stands out, but doesn't seem weird or hard to spell. I will say, we did not commit to it until we had a middle name that flowed, we chose Beckett Connor, and suddenly it sounded perfect to us. The best moment was hearing his older brother say "Beckett Connor", it sounded so sweet. Our area has a lot of non-traditional names, so it doesn't seem odd at all. If for some reason he does not like it when he is older, he can always go by Connor!

I met a little Beckett the other day at work and it was a little girl! The mom's name was Brooke and the name book she had said the meaning of the name was "from a little brooke". That little girl is going to love that story when she's older!

I watch a lot of the TV series "Castle", am I the only one who sees this name working for a girl because of Kate Beckett?
