Lando

A lively nickname with the cool -o ending, Lando has been racing up the UK charts following Lando Norris's Formula 1 debut in 2019. Appearing in the Top 1000 for the first time in 2020, a more recent year saw it place in the Top 300 when it was given to five times as many babies.

Lando is traditionally used as a short form of Rolando or Orlando, though it could also be used for Leandro, Lisandro, or similar. Additionally, it is the Italian form of Lanzo or Lance, meaning "land".

The name has appeared in the Star Wars franchise, borne by Lando Calrissian, a friend of Han Solo and a general in the Rebel Alliance. He appeared in the 80s movies as well as in the films of the late 2010s, which may have also contributed to the rise of the name in England and Wales.

Worn by a 10th century Pope and a popular choice in Renaissance Italy, it has been quietly gaining attention in the US too, with 80 boys given the name in a recent year: the highest number on record, as yet.
