Texas
About Texas
After Dallas, Austin, and Houston, the new cowboy on the block, complete with old-school Western nickname, Tex. Quietly used as a name since at least the late 19th-century, Texas was given to around 20 boys in a recent count.
Possibly meaning "friend", the name was adapted from the indigenous Caddo word táy:sha which was used by the Spanish for the Caddo nation. It was originally spelled as Tejas, but Anglicized as Texas. Alternatively, and perhaps less interestingly, it could also come from the Spanish teja meaning "roof tiles".
Pronounced TEK-sus.
As of October 2026, Texas ranked #5180 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #2280 in 1939.
Editor's take: The name Texas is a boy's name of Spanish, English, Native American origin.
