Walker Origin and Meaning

The name Walker is a boy's name of English origin meaning "cloth-walker".

Walker is both a Waspy surname name—as in the W in George W. Bush—but it also has a gentle ambling quality and a creative connection to such greats as writer Walker Percy and photographer Walker Evans, whose father was also named Walker.

As a common surname, Walker has many other notable namesakes, including author Alice, football great Herschel, blues guitarist T-Bone, and contemporary artist Kara.

Walker was a popular name around the turn of the twentieth century, reaching Number 296 in 1896, remained in use through 1955, then made a return in 1983, becoming a prime representative of the aspirational surnames of the 1980s and 90s.

Walker is one of those surname names that are just meh to me, like Tucker, Turner, Taylor, Palmer, Booker, Hunter, just seems too occupational, verb-ish and strange to use as a first name. I appreciate the fun element of a W- initial for Walker though, and that it's at least a change from the more popular surname names that are a dime a dozen. Also, I second the comment of Walker bringing to mind what they call zombies on the Walking Dead! :b

This was my grandpa's name and I love it! Walker Oswald Jr. was his name. So cute! I love that it's a "cowboy" name too, especially since my husband's name is Colt and my brother's name is Travis. :-)

.....No Walker, Texas Ranger comments?

I get what you mean, but I think people just see them as an expanse on the occupational and surname trends. :)

A weird first name to me. I mean, think Runner, Dancer, Driver, any verbs as a first name is just off to me. I'm shocked this is so high on the Top 1000.

If my sister had been born a boy, this is what she would have been named. Of course in the 1990s The Walking Dead was not in existence, but that aside I think this name would make a strong choice today, especially considering all the weird, made up names currently circulating. To be honest, it reminds me more of Luke SkyWalker from Star Wars, but I guess that series isn't as popular in today's culture.

I like the name Walker and think it might be a good alternative for Parker, which I really like but am afraid it's becoming too popular. Initially I thought it was funny my husband's mind quickly went to the "walkers" in Walking Dead. My first association was Walker Texas Ranger.

Cool name, but too much like Scott Walker

It makes me think of the "walkers" on The Walking Dead... unfortunately, because other than that association I think it's a cute name.
