Gender: Female Pronunciation: REE-an-on Meaning of Rhiannon: "divine queen" Origin of Rhiannon: Welsh

Rhiannon Origin and Meaning

The name Rhiannon is a girl's name of Welsh origin meaning "divine queen".

Most of us had never heard this lovely Welsh name with links to the moon until we heard the 1976 smash hit Fleetwood Mac song of that name, with lyrics by Stevie Nicks. That same year it popped onto the U.S. Top 1000 at Number 593.

After giving his four boys extreme rebel names, director Robert Rodriguez bestowed this sweet name on his first daughter.

According to Celtic legend, Rhiannon's birds sang more sweetly than any others; she herself was known for being forthright and witty.

Rihanna looks similar but is unrelated.

My name is Rhiannon, my mother wanted to name her daughter Rhiannon since she was little, and the song helped reinforce the name. My problem is people being unable to pronounce it, and I can't stand when people pronounce it like it ends in an a. though I wouldn't change my name for anything as it's a rare beauty.

Lol. This isn’t at all a youneek name. Even if you’re unfamiliar with it. Most names we regularly use in English speaking countries aren’t actually English in origin.

I adore this name! And it's awesome that it has a great song to go with it!

i say it as ree-ANN-on because one of my best friends pronounces it that way. I love this name though, much prefer it to mine since it's so rare yet beautiful and is a real name, unlike brayleeigh or whatever.

My name is spelt the same, but pronounced as 'Rye-ann-on'. My parents were an interesting pair. I'm forever telling people it is like the rye bread. :)

One of my favorite name of all time. :)

abertawe Says:

That's what I thought! :) I've never heard it pronounced with the first syllable stressed, even in North America.

You were right actually. "REE-an-on" is an anglicised spelling; in Wales it's "rhee-ANN-on".

I didn't realize it was REE-an-on. I've been saying ree-ANN-on.

Surprise surprise, I first heard this name from the song. And that song is just so beautiful, and really does make the name seem so hauntingly beautiful and magical and enchanting. I don't know if I would use it for my child's name. I love it, but I also feel weird about essentially naming my kid after one of my favourite songs, especially when the name is so uncommon.

Love this name. And its alternative Rigantona but that's too much name for a baby.

Rhiannon was stuck with an arranged marriage but she was in love with someone else. So she trapped her fiance in a bag and threatened to throw him in the river unless he released his 'claim' on her, which of course he did. Then she married the one she loved.

And she's related to more to horses, not birds.

I absolutely loved Rhiannon when I went through a Welsh name loving stage a while back. I still like it very much, but not to the extent I previously did before. It's unique as far as girl's names go, and its spelling looks very intriguing to me. A Rhiannon in my head is either a nature-loving and laid-back woman, or a lively and energetic little girl.

I will admit I am obsessed with Fleetwood Mac, but I also love the name Rhiannon on it's own. The Welsh story adds a lot and my husband is welsh. I am going to use it as a middle name for our little girl. Stella Rhiannon.

Ree Jones Says:

My name is Rhiannon, as I have Welsh heritage. It's a great name. The only problem is that when I was younger people didn't pronounce it correctly and had trouble with it. As I got older, the name became more popular here in Australia and it got easier. The only other thing is that people always go on and on about Fleetwood Mac. I wasn't named after the song, so it's a little annoying! I like the song though.

KLGG88 Says:

It's "youneek" to English speakers. It's Welsh, not English.

I have to say that this comment is somewhat wrong, my parents didn't even know Stevie Nicks had a song named Rhiannon, until the day I asked them if that was what I was named after.

Caroline Says:

Firstly, I love your name!! 2nd, I also hate it when people hear a unique name and they make it sound funny or they think its similar to another name. Every name is Unique on its own!!

BeeBear Says:

But it's not youneek, this is actually the orginal spelling of the welsh name, isn't it? Rhiannon was a welsh goddess
