Gender: Female Origin of Polly: English variation of Molly Meaning of Molly: Diminutive of Mary, Hebrew, "bitter"

Polly Origin and Meaning

The name Polly is a girl's name of English origin.

An alternative to the no-longer-fresh Molly, the initial 'P' gives Polly a peppier sound, combining the cozy virtues of an old-timey name with the bounce of a barmaid.

Associated with Tom Sawyer's aunt, 'Polly, put the kettle on,' parrots, Polly Peachum, Nirvana and Kinks songs, and the movie Along Came Polly, as well as characters in Noel Streatfeild's Ballet Shoes, C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia and now on the Netflix show Orange is the New Black, Polly never achieved the comeback that her cousin did, perhaps because she sounds too Pollyanna-ish. But although she has been off the Social Security list for decades, Polly is Number 457 on Nameberry.

But we'd love to see some new baby Pollys.

Eu Says:

I've seen it used for Leopoldina (in a novel) and, intriguingly, Olympia (on a real baby). I love it as a nickname for Apolline, and also just for Mary and variants...

Alicia1 Says:

I think this name is so cute, I don't ever hear it. I like that its familiar yet underused.

Rainbow glitter Says:

Am i the only one who hates the name Polly, honestly i can't see it being used on a child,it's better on a parrot than a person

paulapuddephatt Says:

I think Pauline in that book was known as Polly. A long time since I read it, but I think that is right.

paulapuddephatt Says:

I used to have an 'adopted' pig named Pollyanna. She was cute, though. I liked the novel. There is a Meredith Brooks song called 'Pollyanne', but I rarely hear of either long version being used.

paulapuddephatt Says:

I would love to see this name used more. I really like it.

morning_glory Says:

Polyhymnia, Pollyanna, Polla, Pollina/Polina, Polendra, Apollonia, Mariposa, and my favourite, Penelope.

Since it's the medieval variant of Molly, and Molly was a nickname for Mary, you could possibly get away with variants of Mary too? Maybe.

Any name started with P- could work too - Pulchra, Petunia, Pivoine . . .

Mikayla395 Says:

Pollyanna could be a longer version!

Wittyusername103 Says:

I'm shocked this hasn't rated in my country as there is a famous columnist for one of the women's magazines with this name who has been around for a long time. Overall this name is cute and I can see it working for an adult however it's going to take a bit more convincing.

foreverharriet Says:

Such a sweet name! Can anyone think of a longer name that could have Polly as a nickname?

LostKid Says:

While there was a Pauline and a Posy, I don't think there was a Polly in Noel Streatfield's Ballet Shoes...?

I used to like this name. I found it to be a cute little vintage name. However, I've read and seen "Girl, Interrupted", and I always think of Polly from there now.
