Gender: Male Origin of Percy: French surname from place name Perci-en-Auge

Percy Origin and Meaning

The name Percy is a boy's name of French origin.

Percy is an adorable old name that is finally shedding its pampered Little Lord Fauntleroy image in this new era of boys with soft yet traditionally male names like Jasper and Elijah. Originating as an aristocratic Norman name, Percy became fairly widespread in England--and to some extent in the US--as an offshoot of the fame of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Percy Bresnahan is a character in the Sinclair Lewis novel Main Street, and one of Thomas the Tank Engine's sidekicks is named Percy; Percy Ignatius Weasley is a Harry Potter character and Perseus "Percy" Jackson is the protagonist of the Heroes of Olympus series.

Love the name, but hate both Percy Jackson and the Harry Potter series.

I'm beginning to appreciate this name more and more. Percy Jackson is a great association, as is Percy Weasley (his character arc is really admirable). I also associate it (history nerd coming out now) with the historic House of Percy, one of the most powerful families in England in the middle ages.

I love this name as a standalone, not as a nickname. I also love the Percy Jackson reference, but not the Percy Weasley one as much. But still, it's a great name.

I adore this name (I named my beloved orange tabby Persie for Persimmon). I'm glad for the Riordan series because I think it renders the name usable again!

The reason I love the name Percy (and Perseus) is because of the Percy Jackson books, as they were the books that got me to love reading and still remain near and dear to my heart. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I still love the names Percy & Perseus. I like a lot of other names from the series too (for different reasons, but love the extra association) like Jason, Thalia, & Zoe.

Percy Jackson is the main character of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan, and shares the spotlight in the Heroes of Olympus series by the same author.
