I think the Arabic meaning is 'myrrh' (or at least that's what Google says), but the Irish meaning is different.

I think Namebery had no call to say that this name isn't lovely. It isn't a name I'm personally particularly fond of, but I don't think they should discourage people from choosing the name they like best.

Nameberry can have their opinion, after all that's what we're weighing in on is our opinions, right? I find the name both unattractive and attractive, first because of how it looks in print and second because Myrna Loy is extraordinary. Myrna Loy wins out for me. Though I can't in honesty say I would name a child it b/c I find the "y" ugly still, but I would name a cat Myrna Loy.

I personally really like the name Myrna but it certainly doesn't mean 'myrrh'. It's an anglicization of the Irish name Muirne which means 'festive' or 'high spirited'.
