Gender: Female Meaning of Michelle: "who is like God" Origin of Michelle: French variation of Michael Michelle's Popularity in 2019: #292

Michelle Origin and Meaning

The name Michelle is a girl's name of French origin meaning "who is like God".

Michelle is the feminine form of Michel, the French variation of Michael. Michael was derived from the Hebrew name Mihka’el, meaning “who is like God.” The alternate spelling Michele, with one “L,” was the original version of the name. Michelle appeared as a later Anglicization in the 20th century.

Onetime superstar name (Number 4 in the seventies) that's now in steep decline, having dropped out of the Top 100. Former First Lady Michelle Obama keeps it in the spotlight. Today's feminine form of Michael is more likely to be some form of Michaela...or Makayla.

Elle_ Says:

I'm a Michelle. I usually participate on the forums and haven't commented on a name like this before, but I feel compelled to say my piece... I was given this name from The Beatles song, Michelle. As a kid, my mom sang it to me as my nighttime lullaby. This is a very precious memory that I can't imagine my life without.... I don't like nicknames (despite my username on here, I never go by Elle haha), but Michelle is a tough name for kids to pronounce, so I'm fine with children calling me Michie (mitch-ee) or Chelle (shell)... Where I live, the name wasn't common among kids my age. I only had one classmate who shared my name. New teachers often saw my name on the roster and said, "Mitchell" or "Michael" which was mortifying, at the time. When kids wanted to tease/bully me, they called me Michael or pointed out the fact that I have the word "hell" in my name. Because of this, I preach on these forums that no name is immune to teasing/bullying, because if a kid wants to make fun of your child, you better believe they will find SOMETHING to pick on... As an adult, a lot of my workplaces have had other women named Michelle or Michele, so it feels a bit common. But I will occasionally meet people who will point out how "French" my facial features are and how I have a French name, then we have a lovely conversation on our heritages. Every now and then I'll meet people who ask if I'm named after The Beatles song, then we have a lovely conversation about the band... Overall, I really love my name :)

It's my middle name too, My first name is Bayleigh. My mom used Michelle after her only older sibling, her half-sister Michelle. I like my middle name, i think it flows well with my first name. I really like Paula, i think it has that antique (no offense intended) sound while also sounding really nice nowadays too. My sister is Carrie and her middle name is Paulette, so you're not alone. and she is only 11. I really like the sound of her name, and it has that antique feel to it.

mistypetal Says:

My name is Michelle, and to be honest, I don't like it. I always felt like there was something lacking, it's just so shallow and too soft sounding, it doesn't match my personality at all. Definitely won't be my first pick, I prefer less popular names.

RoddyThlayli Says:

I actually agree with you about Michaela/Mackayla now. I used to really dislike the Michaela spelling, though I'm not positive why.

paulapuddephatt Says:

Michelle is my middle name. If it was my first, I might have gone by Shelley. I'm always surprised that people don't use Ellie or Elle as short forms. They do for other names, such as Danielle. It would give the name more appeal to modern parents.

paulapuddephatt Says:

Michaela is a prettier spelling. That's lovely, but Michelle is nice, too.

paulapuddephatt Says:

So do I. It's my middle name. I wish it had been my first. Gemma is lovely too, btw. 😃 X

I love this name!

It's my middle name. I like it much more than my first name, Paula. I wouldn't have enjoyed having a very popular name, and this was popular in my generation, but like it, anyway. It is a nice middle name, to be honest. I just wish it was with a prettier first name.

PineWarrior Says:

Someone I completely hate has this name so therefore I think I'll never be able to use it without thoughts of the person I unfortunately know :c

RoddyThlayli Says:

I prefer Mackayla. Michelle always sounded like a sort of shallow, annoying person's name to me.

GeminiMomMich Says:

Although not my first choice for a girl if it were up to me none the less that was the name given to me when I was born. However over the years though my Grandpa would call me "Matilda", my brother & many of my friends just called me "Mich" and before her passing my mother in law called me "Chelle". So I guess I've grown to like the name Michelle as it can be used in a variety of acceptable ways.

Zelliew Says:

Even though Michelle is a bit outdated to me, it's still very pretty when you look at it.

...i believe she is the first lady. so far, we haven't had a female president.

michele_helen Says:

to my knowledge, the true meaning is best represented in the same phrase 'who is like God...' but the *very important* question mark has been left out here.

it should read ' who is like God, ? '

as it is the feminine form of archangel Michael.

there are statues made with this same phrase, or question- rather, where archangel michael is standing over satan with a sword to his throat, inscribed in them in latin. the question mark is obviously important- and one can see why. this is the true, original meaning ( from my understanding ) and takes on a very different one when the question mark is included.

i, personally, am not like God... nor do i want to have a name that appears to make the statement.
