Megan Origin and Meaning

The name Megan is a girl's name of Welsh origin meaning "pearl".

Megan originally evolved from Meg, which itself derived as a nickname for Margaret. Margaret ultimately comes from the Greek word margarites, meaning “pearl.” Megan is no longer a common nickname for Margaret—it is most often used as a full name. Other spellings include Meghan, Meagan, Megyn, and Meaghan.

One of the most popular Welsh names ever in the US—it was Number 10 in the 1990s—Megan is still widely used today, but waning. It fell to its lowest ranking in 50 years in 2017. Actress Megan Fox has upped its glam factor. We've yet to see how the popularity of the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, affects all the spellings of her name.

The name of the annoying sister from Drake and Josh? No thanks.

megan7410 Says:

Funny, that has NOT been my experience. Most littles in my life say "may-may" because they can't say Megan. And 8 months is really really young to be talking... lol.

megan7410 Says:

I'm glad there's a Megan Marie who likes it - I too am Megan Marie and I don't :P

megan7410 Says:

.... probably because it's neither, in my world. I'm MEG-ann. If you say "MAY-guhn" I cringe so hard and then won't talk to you. LOL. But if I had to choose between the two you provided, I would definitely agree with you, and say me-GUHN. But still. It's MEG-ann. ;)

cheesy-biscuit Says:

I prefer the pronounciation 'me-GUHN' not 'MAY-guhn'

Archtress Says:

Heyyo~ Megan is my name. C:
I prefer being called Meg for short though!
The spelling of Maghan reminds me of magazine, which is a stupid version.
Silent Hs are pointless imo.. Meg, Meggy & Megan is a much cuter spelling! <3

AsphodelRose7 Says:

My name is Megan, pronounced Mee-gan. I'm from New Zealand, and Mee-gan seems to be the default pronunciation here, although I've only met a handful of other Megans here so maybe it's just because that's the way I introduce myself?

Carolinekalmes Says:

It's a fine name but I've met so many it just feels a bit bland now.

Megan is a name woahh Says:

My name is Megan!

Mhill46 Says:

This is my name. It's pronounced Meh-gan. I've never heard anyone say Mee-gan.

paulapuddephatt Says:

I say meg-an for either spelling. I'm English, so that might be a factor. If I knew that someone pronounced her name as mee-gan, then I would say it that way, regardless of how it is spelt, but my default is meg-an. I may be wrong, though.

Thepandaprincess223 Says:

Is this pronounced mee-gan or meg-gan I always say mee-gan when spelt like this and Meghan I say meg-gan

MeggiePie012 Says:

This name is cue, easy for little children to understand and say, (my cousin was calling me Megan at 8 months) and a fun choice. My name is Megan, and I get called Meg, Meggie, MeggiePie, and a lot of other nicknames. This name is reliable, and has SO many cute nicknames.

Beth Says:

This name is fine. Nothing extraordinary that will gain attention, but sometimes that's a good thing. I prefer the minimalist spelling (Megan) to all the various versions with the extra n's and h's and a's and e's. All the extras seem excessive to me.

MegEchoes Says:

Megan Marie is my name and I love it

ThistleThorn Says:

Megan, Meghan, Meghanne, Meaghan, Maegan, the list goes on.

Megan R Says:

Prepare to have long debates on how it's spelled- I never see the same spelling twice in a row on my schedules at work.

Leah3456 Says:

A cute, fun name that I can picture on all ages.

madmaddie Says:

I have never understood why this name is so popular...the extra ‘h’ unnecessarily added makes it worse.

AnonymousPerson Says:

Not my favourite name in general, but the nickname Nutmeg makes it adorable.
