Lillian is having a remarkable revival, rising to a peak of Number 21 in 2010 (the highest it's been since the 1920's) before dipping slightly in recent years. It was a Top 10 name in its Lillian Gish-Lillian (born Helen Louise) Russell-Floradora Girl heyday at the turn of the last century.

This name is pretty popular, and I can see why because I love it too. But if you want to use the nn Lilly, then a great alternative could be Lillett (Lie-Lett) or (Lil-ett). I couldn't find this name here on Nameberry, but I looked it up and apparently it means "a budding Lilly" in Latin. :)

If you don't it to be so popular add an extra name after it like Mary so it would be Lillian-Mary but try to make the second name shorter if just flows better with the pronunciation of it.

Just wanted to point this out: If "Lillian probably originated as as a pet form of Elizabeth, completely independent of Lily," then why is the meaning listed as "lily, a flower"?
