Gender: Female Origin of Jessa: Short form of Jessica Meaning of Jessica: English, meaning unknown Jessa's Popularity in 2017: #879

The name Jessa is a girl's name of Hebrew origin. Jessa is ranked #879 on our popularity charts and is often added to lists like Beautiful Bohemian Names for Girls and discussed in our forums with posts like "A brother or sister for little Jack or Olivia".

From the experts:

Once rare, this streamlined form of Jessica has been boosted by two very different television figures: the Jemima Kirke character on HBO series Girls, and reality television daughter Jessa Duggar.

Jessa is far less familiar than former favorite Jessica, a name now solidly in mom-name territory in the US. And yet, it might be too soon for Jessa to feel fresh. Jessamy or Jessamine might be more promising alternatives.

I know what you mean, and I love Gemma and Jenna, also.

This name kind of works, along similar lines to Tessa, but I still much prefer Jessica, with Jess for short. The name didn't become super popular in the UK as early as it did in USA, so it doesn't sound dated here. Even if it was considered dated or old-fashioned, or overused, I would love the name Jessica. It alternated with Charlotte as my favourite girls' name for years. It is currently in my top 4, but not my #1 female name (which is either Lucy or Charlotte).

Yes!! I named my daughter Jessa and some people just don't get it. People call her Jessica, poor girl will get annoyed with that when she gets older. Thank you for getting it! :)

This is like a fresh alternative to the Jenna/Jessica/Jennifer overload. It's elegant but short enough so that it doesn't require a nickname.
