From the experts:

Homer is a name that has traveled from the ancient Greek scribe of the great classical epics to Bart Simpson's doltish dad, and has also become the surprise hot celebrity pick of such parents as Richard Gere (his father's name), Bill Murray, and Anne Heche. Simpsons creator Matt Groening has both a father and a son named Homer.

Because of the epic scope of The Odyssey and The Iliad, the term "homeric" implies work on an enormous scale, while "homeric laughter" references the unrestrained laughter of the Greek gods.

With its quirky resume, Homer could make an interesting choice.

and doesn't he end up working at NASA building the rocket that got to the moon? thats not a bad namesake either even if you didn't like the movie

Underrated and criminally underused. Shame such cultured names get shunned because of the Simpsons

Personally, I couldn't name my son Homer thanks to the Simpsons patriarch, but if I met a young boy named Homer I could definitely change my opinion! There are names I couldn't imagine on a person until I met someone who wore it, and my viewpoint totally changed. :-)

This name makes me think of Homer Hickam from October Sky, a movie about a couple of boys who have a dream of building a rocket. He's played by Jake Gyllenhaal though, so it's really not that bad I guess...

Love this name and I disagree that Homer Simpson ruined it. Homer Simpson rules and so does Homer as in The Iliad, both work for me!

It's such a shame that Homer Simpson ruined this name, because the Ancient Greek Homer would be a cool namesake.

I love this name! It's my top choice if I have a boy. I have gotten some bad feedback (regarding Homer Simpson), but I think it's a strong, masculine name, and I can see my baby boy grow with a name like this.
