Gender: Male Meaning of Geoffrey: "pledge of peace" Origin of Geoffrey: Anglo-Saxon from French

Geoffrey Origin and Meaning

The name Geoffrey is a boy's name of French, Anglo-Saxon origin meaning "pledge of peace".

In the US, this spelling is less common than mid-century favorite Jeffrey, and it has faded from popularity faster. This more British spelling is the usual form for historical figures like Geoffrey Chaucer and the Welsh historian Geoffrey of Monmouth, and as such it may feel more rooted and enduring.

My SO's name is spelled like this. I think it's very fitting to him. However, people tend to spell it with a J and read it off incorrectly, pronouncing it with a "Jof" in the beginning. It's not a common spelling within our age group and considered more of a "Dad" name like Kenneth and Scott.
