Gender: Female Meaning of Emmy: "work; universal" Origin of Emmy: Diminutive of Emily and Emma Emmy's Popularity in 2017: #610

The name Emmy is a girl's name meaning "work; universal". Emmy is ranked #610 on our popularity charts and is often added to lists like Baby Girl Names Ending in Y and discussed in our forums with posts like "Picky Parents BNG".

From the experts:

Long a nickname for all the Em-names, as well as an annual award, Emmy is now being given on its own, as are soundalikes Emme and Emmi. Might be too identified with the TV awards--though that doesn't seem to have hurt Oscar or Tony. We think Emmy is a little too cutesey, and is probably best kept as a nickname for something that ages a little better.

Sapphire Says:

I love this name on its own, but I don’t think I would ever use it because people would think her really name is either Emily or Emma, which I don’t want to happen, but I still LOVE this name on its own

JossieChris Says:

I love this with a secondary name like EmmyLou, Emmie Kay or Emmi-Joe. Then you can use a middle name as well. However I think I prefer this as a short form of the more formal name ex Emersyn Josephine for professional usage purposes. But no reason Emmy can't stand on her own. Though she may have a few classmates sharing it.

paulapuddephatt Says:

Cute, but more of a nickname, to me. We had a budgie named Emerald, who was Emmy for short.

Sel Says:

Emmy is usually a dimutive for Emma or Emmaline.

snowsbeloved Says:

Oooo, Redemption...I've never heard of that as a name before. I'd use it for a middle name though.

Britt/Bratt Says:

Emmy is her nickname, but I agree that it sounds more like a nickname.

snowsbeloved Says:

Doesn't age well, not even for Emmy Rossum. I agree it's just too cutesy. I feel like it's a very nice nickname but give a full name that could be an asset in a career, but allow her to decide to stick with Emmy or not.

MiaLuv Says:

I Always Wanted To Be Named Emmy/Emmie/Emmi

mabespark Says:

Cute nickname.

raevynstar Says:

I like it, but it would be better as a nickname for Redemption or even Emily.
