Gender: Male Meaning of Calix: "chalice" Origin of Calix: Male variation of Calixta or Latin

Calix Origin and Meaning

The name Calix is a boy's name of Greek, Latin origin meaning "chalice".

Calix derives from the Latin word for chalice, calyx, which in turn came from the Ancient Greek word kálux, meaning “husk” or “pod.” It is also considered a diminutive of Calixtus, a variation of the Late Roman name Callistus meaning “most beautiful.” Calyx can also be spelled Calyx, as in the funnel or chalice-shaped part of a flower.

Calix is starting to be very quietly used (54 boys in the U.S. were named Calix in 2018), probably thanks indirectly to actress Calista Flockhart, who brought one female version of this attractive Greek name to prominence.

It doesn't sound like callus though..

I really like Calix (and nickname Cal), but as well as a flower, the calyx is also a part of the kidney. A bit less glamorous, but I don't think it would necessarily stop me using this name.

Calix sounds and looks like a futuristic sci-fi name, and I also think it'd make the perfect name for a pet cat! I think of the part of the flower (spelled calyx) and the the telecom company Calix in association to this name.

ziggywiggy Says:

I've heard both Cal-ix (rhymes with Alex) and cay-liks, The Cal-iks one more commonly said. I never heard of it as Cuh-liks before

I can't get past the fact that this name sounds like callus, which are just painful and unsightly

I'm not buying the Calista Flockhardt connection. Calix didn't make the SSA list until 2002, even though Ally McBeal began in 1997. There may be some correlation to her level of fame, but it definitely doesn't strike me as being good enough concordance to point to causation. (I first heard it in a plant class)
