The name Bellatrix is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "female warrior". Bellatrix and is often added to lists like Celestial Baby Names and discussed in our forums with posts like "Baby a Day".
From the experts:
J.K. Rowling is a modern master of naming, but this appellation of one of the stars of Orion, used for the evil character played by Helena Bonham Carter, is not one you'd want to use for your child.

Pop culture references aren’t going to ruin this name for me because it’s so much more than that. It’s beautiful and unique, definitely one of my top names!
It's a stunning name, nn options Belle, Bella and Trixie - but has been made almost unusable, via the Harry Potter series.
Beatrix is much classier, without all the Harry Potter business to worry about. Bellatrix sounds kind of silly IMO.
This is a GP of mine. It's a lovely name with an empowering meaning. I doubt I could dissociate it from HP, though.
I love Harry Potter and Bellatrix is my favourite character so I would love to name my future daughter this.
I barely remember the book series. I like the astronomy connection. This would be a lovely middle name, at least.
I don't care about the bad history, I love this name!
Bella who turns tricks.
Silly parents!Trix are for kids!
I like the meaning. I think it's one of the better "Bella" names.
I much prefer this bella name to Isabella.
The meaning is amazing, the sound is lovely... but, Lestrange.
I'd like Bellatrix if JK Rowling hadn't made it so attached to Lestrange.
I loathed the character Bellatrix. I could never imagine using this name. But, if your kid can pull it off then A+.
I am a die-hard Potterhead, but I actually have always liked the name Bellatrix. Of course, the character is a psycho, but I think the name is lovely.
I love the way this name sounds, I love the meaning, and I love the astrology connection, I just wish it wasn't so connected with a negative character. I hope someone creates a more famous very positive character so I can use this someday soon.
Wait a decade.
I love Harry Potter but would not go this far...............
This is a really good name for tomboys and girls who aren't super duper annoying and girly but prefer being tough and strong
Not a fan
The meaning behind Orion is not very good one to be honest.
I prefer Beatrix than this.
Ugh this would be a perfect name if not for the character. I wish some amazingly wonderful Bellatrix would get famous and save this name from its image so I can use it a few years!
Besides Bella and Trixie, there's Bebe, TT, Bel, Lala, and if you want to stretch there could be Lottie perhaps.
does anyone have ideas for nicknames?
I think this name, as well as it's meaning, are beautiful and strong. Bellatrix was one of my favorite characters in the series. She may not have been the purest, but her name fitted her well.
I really like this name, and I did not get far enough into HP to even know of this person. I like this sooo much more than Beatrix.
I actually really like this name and its meaning.
We named our son Orion because I love greek mythology, constellations, celestial, etc. But mainly bc of the meaning behind Orion. When the next baby was to come I thought it would be cool to give them a star name from the Orion constellation. Bellatrix is awesome bc of its meaning "female warrior" but also bc it's the 3rd brightest star in the orion constellation. Now that we are pregnant with a girl I love this name for her. SHe can then go by Bella or Trixie.
Too bad J.K. Rowling's books are so popular...I could see this really taking off if not for the character! :(
