Aubrey Origin and Meaning

The name Aubrey is a girl's name of French, English origin meaning "elf ruler".

The unisex name Aubrey is scooting up the girls' popularity charts, along with the revived Audrey. After being a 100% male name, it tipped to female in 1974, and is now 98% girls, among the most popular girls' names starting with A.

I think of a tall teenage girl who has long, light brown hair, a soft, quiet voice, freckles all over her face, big, hazel eyes, and is an avid reader, a guitar player, a great friend, sweet, shy, and smart. Everyone has different connotations for different names.

This is my little sisters name, I normally am very biased with my family members names, but since she ruined my life and my relationship with my father I despise this name. Not even gonna mention that this is literally a guys name. Stick with Audrey people.

Everytime I hear or see this name I associate with an annoying little girl with crispy greasy curly blonde hair, blue eyes, snot all over her face around her nostrils, always has meltdowns, has speech problems, and is overweight.
I'm sorry, but I just do.

I first heard the name Aubrey in a popular song by Bread. The song Aubrey appeared on Bread's 1972 album Guitar Man and lasted 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the lyrics, the singer talks about longing for a girl named Aubrey for whom he had unrequited love.

Me too. I have loved this name for over 20 years.

So do I, but Aubrey actually originated as a unisex name, being both the vernacular English form of Alberic and the female Albreda.

I definitely prefer this on a boy.

Calling your daughter Aubrey is not the same as calling her Jameson or Owen, as it started out as a completely androgynous name.

I much prefer this to Audrey, and can see it on either gender.

There's not an ounce of strength in this name. So wishy washy, for either male or female. This is one of the very few names that I can say I absolutely hate.

I hate when boy names are used for girls, audrey is better anyways

Thanks to Teen Mom 2, I can no longer look at the name Aubrey without saying Aubree.

My husband saw this name and said he liked it and I think it sounds too much like Audrey. However, I love the nickname "bree", so I suppose that is one good thing about it. I personally wouldn't choose it.

I am not sure I like it or not, but I definitely wouldn't name my daughter this.

I don't usually like supposed-to-be-male names on girls, but I have a friend called this who is a girl, which has tipped me into preferring it for girls. Although that would probably mean I'm biased.

And one spelled it Aubree. Which just looks kind of whiny like "Aubreeeeeeee!" I don't completely associate this name with Teen Mom, however. It was one ofumy favorites when I was younger.

At least 3 teen moms on 16 and Pregnant have used Aubrey so this has "teen mom" written all over it. I do kinda like Audrey though.

Most people probably would not of course, but all I can associate this name with is Teen Mom/16 and Pregnant on MTV. That's two of the teenagers now who have named their kid some spelling of Aubrey. It sounds to me like the "Ashley" or "Kelsey" of the 2010s.
