A middle name in my dad's family. This was one of the first spellings of this name, and it's also a common last name. The description is a bit confusing.

Allen is a cool name, but I am not sure why it is being run through nameberry apparently hundreds of times a day. Sometimes the ticker tape is almost all Allen!

I disagree with Nameberry's comment on Allen. I think Alan does sound rather dated, though it's a great name with a wonderful meaning and a nice sound to it. But Allen sounds and looks fresher to me (I'd pronounce Allen with more emphasis on -len, VS. more A- emphasis on Alan).
It has more of a chill, laid-back, bluesy, vintage sort of vibe- and a better candidate for revival (just take a look at names like Arthur and Hazel!). Al and Len are nice nicknames, or just full Allen.
