Vesper Origin and Meaning

The name Vesper is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "evening star".

This Latin word used for evening spiritual services was introduced to baby namers by the Eva Greene character Vesper Lynd in the modern James Bond film Casino Royale in 2006, based on the Ian Fleming novel, and is just now beginning to provoke interest among namers, with its spiritual reference and soft, whispery sound.

On a more earthly note, the 'Vesper Martini' is the famous drink ordered by James Bond in both the book and the movie Casino Royale.

Casino Royale was published in 1953, 34 years prior to the Lloyd Alexander books.

Eu Says:

This was not introduced by the Bond film (although I'm sure many modern parents heard it there first). There was already a wonderful series of children's books by Lloyd Alexander, the first published in 1987, featuring marmalade-haired Victorian girl detective Vesper Holly, which are highly recommendable and make another great namesake for a little girl.

Haids1987 Says:

Hahaha, thank you. It had been too many years since I last watched it! :D

Princess Vespa* from Spaceballs =)

PontyPool Says:

I knew a Vesper. She was a vampiric slut and a bloated bag of treachery and deceit. I have such an awful association with this name. Im so upset my wife suggested it.

alyssum Says:

Vespertine is beautiful!

EthelBeavers Says:

I dislike this name.
It also reminds me of a vespa scooter.

Haids1987 Says:

Princess Vesper from Spaceballs. :-P

TaliaCat Says:

I'm intrigued, and this is growing on me. I think of Vespers, which is the monastic last prayer of the day in Catholic tradition--- part of the Liturgy of the Hours. But that kind of makes me like this name more. It does sound kind of like a whispered prayer. Very ethereal, like incense smoke rising to Heaven.

AldabellaxWulfe Says:

I think it's nice for a girl but, due to its unisex nature and similarity to the solidly masculine Casper, Jasper, Wilder etc., find myself prefering the more obviously feminine versions, e.g. - Vespera, Vespertine, Vesperina.

headintheclouds Says:

Lovely, definitely unique name, with a beautiful meaning. I do think of Eva Green in association to Vesper- I'd imagine a Vesper to look like her, brunette, killer-gorgeous, with a film noir vintage glamor. I'd go with Vesper for a star-meaning alternative to the more popular Stella, or if you'd want just a more offbeat choice in general.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience here, it's so helpful for us, Joanne. We're really considering naming our second daughter Vesper, because we love the name. Her 3 yr old sister is Verity. But we're wondering how you found people's reactions to the name? Do they reference the Bond connection - or the cocktail? Does anyone ever know about the evening star connection?

I just adore this name. I gave it to my kitten upon her adoption. Sadly she was gone a few months later having been born with a low immune system and FIP, however my love for the name carries forward and perhaps I will one day have another little Even'Star scampering about! ; )

Alicia1 Says:

At first glance, I don't like the look of this name. I do like the "V" and the originality, the meaning is special too. I'm on the fence about it.

jojobabyberry Says:

Vesper is one of my favorites, I think it's so beautiful!

faithnamer Says:

This is such a unique name - I'm not sure what my opinion on it is! It always reminds me of the children's scary story the Vinder Viper when I see it on here though.. probably just because it's a 'v' name!

ldougie Says:

I'm unsure if I am in love with this name or I really hate it. Either way, it is unique and trendy.

Nooshi Says:

We named our baby girl Vesper! I wanted a unique V name and the hub loved the 007 character. She's our little princess and will be one of a kind!

Sweekune Says:

I love this name for its meaning, the bond reference and it's ethereal sound. Although I wouldn't use it as a first name, am very keen to us it as a middle.
