Piper Origin and Meaning

The name Piper is a girl's name of English, Romanian origin meaning "pipe or flute player".

Piper is a bright, musical name that entered the list in 1999, one year after the debut of the TV series Charmed, which featured a Piper, and it's been a consistent riser since. Piper Kerman is the memoirist whose prison experiences provided the basis for the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Piper has been chosen by several celebs for their daughters, including Gillian Anderson and Cuba Gooding, Jr., and is now one of the top girls' names starting with P.

One of the first Pipers on the scene was Piper Laurie (born Rosetta), after whom actress Piper Perabo was named.

Beautiful! Piper is such an awesome, spunky-sounding name. One of my favourites. I especially love the combos Piper Violet and Piper Elizabeth.

QueenieGuldbaek Says:

Hate the double p's.

beachbear Says:

I used to not like Piper, but then I watched the adorable Pixar short film "Piper" about the best birds ever :)

paulapuddephatt Says:

Love this name

MaryKathryn Says:

SUCH A GOOD NAME. This is always a go-to name of mine. It packs such a punch and it's one of those names that can always be used. It's not too trendy, not too out-of-date, and it has the power of the Charmed ones to back it up!

Thepandaprincess223 Says:

i think any little girl would like this name

peachysugarbuns Says:

I'd never name my child Piper, for fear they'd somehow resemble the two little girls I've met with this name. They're the loudest, whiniest children I've ever come across, and truly, neither ever "pipe down". *shudder*

IvyTheRoserade Says:

I've loved this name since Charmed came out and I started watching it! It's not bad to love a name because you heard it on a tv show or in a movie first.

Lou Says:

This is one "trendy" name that I absolutely love, despite its popularity.

SimoneKadele Says:

I agree so much. I know a Piper, and she was named long before OITNB came to be. This applies to a ton of pop culture names. Hermione is one I wish people would acknowledge OUTSIDE of the character. :)

SimoneKadele Says:

So sassy!

grantairebear Says:

I have been hmming about this name but I think it would be a lovely name to use to honour a family member that died. He was a piper (bagpipes) and although his name would be too painful to use on a son (or a feminised version for a daughter), I think Piper would be a lovely nod to him without associating my daughter with him or his death. I would definitely consider using it for a daughter and, although I am a fan of OITNB, the name has much more significance to me than naming it after a character on a t.v. show that I don't particularly like. (For real, if I was naming my child after people on that show, she would be Laverne, Yael, Nicky or Morello. All of those names are much cooler than Piper)

actingfun Says:

I met a really sweet little girl named Piper once. It's not very popular where I live, so it's nice to have good associations with it.

aubreyblanchard Says:

Piper Curda is very pretty.

scblovesnames Says:

I've never really considered this name, but I do like it.

TaliaCat Says:

I have always liked this name. I never thought anyone had it except Piper Laurie until I met a girl in college named Piper, and then I liked it even more.

Catastroffy Says:

Creepy indeed.

amberdaydream Says:

This name reminds me of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Which might not be so bad, but you have to admit, he was creepy.

Caroline Says:

I like it! It's unique!

Zoey_Artemisia Says:

This name is so spunky! Love it way more than Harper. And I have absolutely NO idea what TV show everyone's going on about... An added bonus!

jordalini Says:

I really love this name and always have, I admit I first heard it from charmed, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Piper was a strong character and the glue of the family. I am surprised where this is in the charts because I have never met a Piper in real life! anyways. This name is super cute, and I would definitely use it.

Guest Says:

Why I personally don't like the name is that I just think in terms of sound, it's just weird. It reminds me of like plumbing or paprika or something. I don't even think of Orange is the New Black or Piper Laurie.

Alicia1 Says:

I can't understand why this name is so popular.

clairels Says:

I really wanted to name my cat this when I was ten years old. It's that kind of name.

Guest Says:

I named my rescued 8mo white miniature poodle Piper, it fits her quirky, spunky personality to a T!:)!

jtay07 Says:

Beautifully stated point about a wonderful and spunky name. Piper is so sweet and full of life. I would love to give a future daughter this name. A name can have associations in pop culture without the parents choosing that name because of an association with, say, a tv character.

Neverevergiveup Says:

With all due respect, for those of you who ASSUME a child named Piper is likely named after a TV character is ignorant and judgemental, especially since we all name our children for very personal, special reasons. Maybe that absolutely angelic, truly spunky, captivatingly precocious child named Piper was named after a beautifully streamlined Piper airplane that gave one parent the feeling of freedom and peace from a childhood of pain. A memory so important and special AND beautiful it was a natural choice for her name. A plane that holds so much more meaning than could ever be explained here. Therefore, I hope the next time you meet or hear of a child named Piper, you will remember that my daughter's parents never laid eyes on a TV program called Charmed and she was born 9 years before this new program OITNB. In fact, I only knew of one Piper; she was an actress in her 70's at the time my baby was born, Piper Laurie.

mabespark Says:

I really want to like this.

hellogoodbye111 Says:

I sort of dislike this name, it's too preppy. I also don't like it when people name their kids after TV shows, and with OITNB I think it wouldn't be a good idea. Also it would be a cute name for a little girl but not a woman.

jasminegarden Says:

One of my favourite names! It's very beautiful & would suit any little girl, whether she was strong & independent, shy & sweet, or cheeky & loud.

Plutophelia Says:

I have been on the fence with this name for YEARS; I wasn't sure if it was wearable enough. But just today I met a little girl with this name and I am converted. This name is so cute and it fit her spunky personality so well. I also think it would transition well into adulthood, Piper Kerman from OITNB shows that it isn't just a cutesy name.

SparkleNinja18 Says:

I think Piper is very strong and spunky. I very much like it, but I don't think I would ever use Piper.

Theodora_Phoenix Says:

Nor can I. I don't really like it one bit. It's one of those so so names for me. You know, the ones that aren't your absolute favorites, but don't make you cringe every time you see or hear them.

Guest Says:

I don't understand why people like this name so much.
