Phyllis Origin and Meaning

The name Phyllis is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "green bough".

Phyllis has been used by classical poets for the idealized pastoral maiden. A Greek mythological name of a woman who was turned into an almond tree, Phyllis was in the Top 100 from 1916 to 1958, reaching #24 in 1929, and has the (remote) possibility of joining other revived s-ending names like Iris. In the 'St Clare' book series by Enid Blyton Phyllis is nicknamed Fizz. Just a thought. Phyllida is a variation that sounds at once more old-fashioned and more stylish.

I love this name, and am particularly drawn to the Phillis spelling, since reading Cousin Phillis, the novella by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Wait - how can Phyllis be in both the "Cool Classic Girls' Names" list AND the "Names No Girl May Be Cool Enough For" list???? Come on, Nameberry.

Just on the sound and meaning of the name, I like Phyllis. It's pretty. I understand if people think of it as an "old lady name" though. Growing up, I didn't know any women named Phyllis, but I had an old book originally written in the early 20th century with a cute child character with the name.

Floris Says:

Reminds me too much of "phallisch" (the German word for phallic). But this could be really lovely in a non-German speaking country.
