Gender: Female Meaning of Jolie: "pretty" Origin of Jolie: French Jolie's Popularity in 2017: #667

The name Jolie is a girl's name of French origin meaning "pretty". Jolie is ranked #667 on our popularity charts and is often added to lists like Classic Baby Names with a Twist and discussed in our forums with posts like "The middle name game (with a twist)!".

From the experts:

Jolie is as pretty as its literal meaning; nowadays it is also seen as a girls’ name, via Angelina for whom Jolie was originally her middle name.

Although it is French, Jolie is rarely if ever used as a name in France. In the US, it appeared briefly on the Top 1000 list in the seventies, then returned in 2000, following Ms. Jolie's 1999 Oscar win for Girl, Interrupted.

The name Joely, as in actresses Joely Richardson and Joely Fisher, is unrelated and pronounced differently. A nice association is the iconic Picasso painting, Ma Jolie.

Accent on the second syllable, correct?

bethlena Says:

I much prefer the spelling Joely.

Impwood Says:

That's one way of looking at it, I suppose. What I was thinking was that a Jolie's name would not be respectable if she went to France, and the name has less history and real meaning as a name than other choices.

Britt/Bratt Says:

In that case most names would be unusable since they have meanings.

Britt/Bratt Says:

Angelina Jolie is the only person I've heard with this name.

Hylian Wizard Says:

I know how Jolie is pronounced, though. I like it, just wouldn't necessarily actually use it as a name.

Impwood Says:

If I heard that people in France were calling their daughters Pretty (pronounced incorrectly), I would think it was silly -- and this is the same thing.

indiefendi2 Says:

I don't see how Jolie is different from common Julie. just a dash of "pretty" to it. 😌

Zelliew Says:

I've never heard this in Australia
