I knew an Iona in school, but she was Indian and she said ee-WAH-nah.

I've only ever met one Iona - it's an unusual but lovely name. I do prefer Ione though - it's more mellifluous and has a more classical feel. I also like just Io, which is probably what I'd use as a nickname for either Iona or Ione.

I knew a girl with this name who was teased by kids asking her what she owned but she still loved her name and didn't care what others thought because she had been named after her great-grandmother

I so would use this name but I feel the "you own a what" punchline is just waiting to be used. sigh.
