Gender: Female Meaning of Eve: "life" Origin of Eve: Hebrew Eve's Popularity in 2017: #436

The name Eve is a girl's name of Hebrew origin meaning "life". Eve is ranked #436 on our popularity charts and is often added to lists like Bible Names for Girls and discussed in our forums with posts like "Baby a Day".

From the experts:

Eve, the oldest name in the Book, is now coming back into style, having the virtues of simplicity and purity, yet with more strength and resonance than other single-syllable names like Ann. British actor Clive Owen chose Eve for his daughter, as did Jessica Capshaw.

While Eve is compromised by its similarity to trendy sisters Ava, Eva, Avery, Evelyn, Evie, ad infinitum, it still has them all beat with its streamlined classic style.

The rapper born Eve Jihan Jeffers goes by the mononame Eve.

Fictional Eves have figured prominently in the films All About Eve, Three Faces of Eve, and WALL·E, and on TV in Angel and Xena: Warrior Princess.

Eve is the anglicized form of the Gaelic Aoife.

I'm always the odd person? I don't like this name. It's bland and boring.

Thank you. She's 16 now, and she loves her name. Hates when anyone else has "her name" ☺ and not until now, as a junior in high school, has anyone else had it. The other Eve is a Freshman this year at the school.

I picked out the name Zoë for my future daughter while in 10th grade, from Danielle Steele's book Zoya. 15 years later I have birth to my daughter Zoë Kay. I found out the name was Greek for LIFE.

A year later, pregnant with what would be my 2nd daughter, I was at a complete loss for a name if I had another girl. I had Jack picked out for a boy, but couldn't think of a girls name! My husband printed out sheet after sheet of baby names and one day I picked up the E section and there I found the name Eve.

I gave birth to Eve Mary a few months later and when I was asked the meaning of her name I had to look it up.. Found out Eve is Hebrew for LIFE!

So lo and behold, Stacey, the RESURRECTION, had two daughters that both mean LIFE!

love this story!

You've hit the nail on the head! Eve is such a gorgeous, classy, understated choice. Sure, lots of similar-sounding names are wildly popular (Eva, Evelyn, Evie, Ava...) but actually just Eve, no frills, is remarkably uncommon. I think it's such a beautiful name.
