Gender: Male Origin of Earl: English aristocratic title

Earl Origin and Meaning

The name Earl is a boy's name of English origin.

Earl is a title name - brought to England by the vikings - that's out of fashion right now, unlike King and Duke. Its peak popularity was in the 1920s, which gives it a dusty great-grandpa feel, but there are also younger Earls in pop culture, like the reformed criminal in "My Name is Earl".

I am growing to like this name! I had never been much of a fan of Earl until I read A Woman's Place by Lynn Austin. In this book (which I HIGHLY reccomend for great plot lines, deep characters and fabulous twists) a secondary character is Earl Seaborn. He is one of the most gentlemanly, tender-hearted, deep-feeling characters I have read of, and that is the association I now attach to wonderful Earl!
I don't know how this name would work on a little boy, but I imagine it would be positively irresistible on a freckle-faced little boy with a twinkle in his eye. He'll likely be the only young Earl he knows, but I think it would be worth it!
