We are naming our baby boy Barrett, simply for the "bear strength" meaning and German origin. My husband wanted a strong-sounding name, and I wanted one that sounded confident and adventurous. I think it is a nice mix of both. And the nickname, Bear, we both adore!

As far as surname names go, I like the grounded and abrupt, to-the-point sound to Barrett, and its double r's and double t's in the spelling that make it seem busy and industrious to me (I feel the same way about Merritt). This makes me think someone named Barrett would be a straight-shooting, practical and competent type of person whom you could rely on. Plus I like the association to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, whose poetry work, legacy and epic love story I find amazing and inspiring.

Barrett has the same feel as Everett to me--sort of swashbuckling hero.
