Names I like love or just think are cool

Just names I’ve accumulated from watching many videos, reading many lists and lots of research

Better than Capricorn or Cancer, not as usable as Leo, the name of the Roman god of war becomes more possible as a baby name every day, as mythological names take the place of biblical names.

Aries

When Jennifer finally gave up her Number 1 place on the girls' popularity list, her crown was passed to Jessica, who reigned for not one but two decades. Jessica was the Number 1 name in both the mid-1980s and 1990s, never sounding quite as trendy as its predecessor, maybe because of its classic Shakespearean pedigree.

Jessica fell out of the Top 10 in 2001 and has been heading straight downhill ever since, though she still ranks in the middle of the Top 1000. Our guess is that a lot of new moms who loved the name Jessica growing up are now giving it to their daughters, though it's far from a fashionable choice.
Jessica seems to have been coined in this form by Shakespeare for the character of Shylock's daughter in The Merchant of Venice, possibly as an Anglicization of the biblical name Iscah. There are several attractive Jessicas on the scene today, including Jessica Lange, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jessica Simpson, and Jessica Chastain.
Many Jessicas, grownup as well as newborn, are called Jessie or Jess, which freshens up the name as one of the stylish boyish nicknames for girls. Other variations in use include Jessi, Jessy, Jesse, Jessa, and Jesslyn.

Jessica

Birdie was until recently a middle-aged Ladies' Club member wearing a bird-decorated hat --but now it's just the kind of vintage nickname (think Hattie, Josie, Mamie, Millie) that's coming back into style in a big way. Actress Busy Philipps named her baby Birdie (inspired by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson), as did soap star Maura West.
In an earlier heyday of nickname names--the 1880's--Birdie was a Top 200 name.

This classic yet poetic Italian name for boys, is a Top 50 choice in its native Italy, and has been climbing up the charts in the US and the UK too. It had sporadically made the US charts throughout the 20th century, but it has been consistently present since 2009.

Notable bearers include Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini, football manager Vincenzo Montella, and cyclist Vincenzo Nibali. The name is borne by multiple saints and has appeared on the long running Australian soap opera, where it was used for the character Jarrod Vincenzo Rebecchi "Toadie".

Trailing behind the popular short form Enzo, it is given to around 350 boys in the US each year.

The appealingly energetic Dax, with its trendy X-ending, re-entered the Top 1000 in 2007. Its somewhat sci-fi vibe emanates from his appearance as a fictional being in the Star Trek universe, seen on the TV show "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." The Power Rangers character Dax Lo was the Blue Ranger.
In real life, actor Dax Shepard hosts the popular podcast Armchair Expert and played the TV character of Crosby Braverman on "Parenthood." His parents named him for the protagonist of the best-selling Harold Robbins novel, The Adventurers-- Dax Xenos.
Dax is also a French community famous as a spa.
Dax is unlikely to become popular in Australia, sounding too much like the word dacks, which means boys' underwear.

Angelica is by far the choicest form of the angelic names -- more delicate than Angelina, more feminine than Angel, more modern than Angela. But though Angelica is so lacy and poetic, it lags behind the bolder Angelina (probably for obvious reasons).
Angelica was introduced to England from Italy in the seventeenth cenury, and is heard in early poetry and plays, including Romeo and Juliet. Angelica Schuyler, played by Renee Elise Goldsberry, is one of the most appealing characters in Broadway sensation Hamilton.
Anjelica is a variant spelling, as in Anjelica Huston.

Ryan returned to the Top 500 for girls in 2015 and will no doubt continue to climb further on the back of the success of blockbuster film Gravity. A word of caution, however – the meaning and the movie reference may leave your daughter feeling as though you wished she were a son You may wish to go with Rion instead, which is similar in sound and means Queen in Irish. Rion is pronounced ree-on, which introduces problems of its own.

Bridget is the Anglicized form of Brigid, an Irish-Gaelic name that was derived from the word brígh, which means "strength."
Bridget is the name of the most famous female saint of Ireland, who became the patroness of her country, as well as patron saint of scholars, poets and healers. Because of her sanctity, the name did not come into common use in Ireland until the seventeenth century, after which it became wildly popular. Bridget eventually came to be used as a pejorative name for an Irishwoman; Irish maids in the early 20th century US were derogatorily called "the Bridgets."

One of the earliest Irish names for girls to immigrate to the USA, Bridget, the most familiar form of the name of the Celtic goddess of wisdom, is still used by traditionalists but also carries some modern spark and a great meaning. Bridget is one of the exclusive group of girl names that mean strong, brave, or powerful.

According to Irish myth, there were three sister goddesses named Brigid: the goddess of poetry, the goddess of healing, and the goddess of agriculture.
Most prominent Bridgets today are actresses Fonda and Moynahan, op artist Bridget Riley, and the fictional hapless Bridget Jones—she and her diary the protagonist of four books, three movies, and even a musical.

Irish variants include Brighid, Brigid (as in the devious character in The Maltese Falcon), Bridie, Biddy, Brid and Bedelia.

Theodora is one of the most revival-worthy of the charmingly old-fashioned Victorian valentine names, softly evocative but still substantial, as is the reversed-syllable Dorothea.

The name Theodora was borne by several saints and by the beautiful ninth wife of the Emperor Justinian, who became the power behind his throne. A later royal was Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, the older sister of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Theodora offers a menu of neat nicknames, from the classic Teddy to trendy Thea to the vintage Dora. Theodora also has some cool international variations as well: Theodosia, Feodora and Teodora. It re-entered the US Top 1000 in 2019 for the first time in over 60 years and for a while seemed destined to follow brother name Theodore toward the top of the list. 2024 saw it fall in popularity, though time will tell if this downward trend continues.

Keith Richards named his daughter Theodora back in 1985, while Robbie Williams did the same in 2012, and affectionately calls her Teddy. It was also chosen by content creators Jessica and Claudia Kellgren-Fozard for one of their daughters, born in 2025, a twin to Augusta. In TV's Grey's Anatomy Dr. Theodora "Teddy" Altman was a surgeon.

Amos is a robust biblical name that's being discovered by a new generation of parents in a major way. Similar to other popular choices like Amias, Asa, Moses, and Thomas, it has a contemporary air with plenty of history.

Derived from the Hebrew amas meaning "burden", it is sometimes interpreted more figuratively to mean "carried by God". It is notably associated with the Jewish prophet and author of the Old Testament book named after him. Popular among the Puritans, it has ranked in the US charts nearly consistently since the 1880s, excepting 2006, 2008, and 2010.
There are characters named Amos in novels by George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, and its most famous contemporary bearer is Israeli author Amos Oz. The name has also been associated with Famous Amos cookies, a company founded by Wally Amos.

The name may be pronounced as AY-mohss (to rhyme with cross or boss) or AY-muhs (to rhyme with famous) in English.

Gentle but grandiose and beloved by British novelists including Evelyn Waugh and P. G. Wodehouse, Ambrose was a fast rising name in 2022. Entering the UK Top 1000 for the first time and proving popular among Nameberry users, its elegance, softness, and vintage style means it fits in with popular Theodore, Sebastian, and Jeremiah.
With an air of blooming well-being, Ambrose feels a bit upper-class, a little posh, but not too stuffy. It comes from the same Greek root as 'ambrosia', the food of the gods, said to confer immortality.
Ambrose was the name of one of the important doctors of the early Christian church, the fourth century St. Ambrose. It also belonged to one of the four great Latin teachers of Christianity, who also developed the use of music in church services. TV fanatics might be interested to know that in 1961, Ambrose was designated the patron saint of educational television by Pope John XXII.
One thing that might given some parents pause is the problem of finding a nickname for the stately Ambrose. Ami? Bro? Amby? They might work for some, but other options include the stylish Bo, the literary Bram, the sweet Ro, or even the unexpected and unisex Rose.

Huxley is definitely rising as a surname name, with its X that makes almost any name cooler. It debuted in the US Top 1000 in 2015. The modern nicknames Hux and Huck certainly don't hurt.
Last year, about 370 babies were named Huxley in the US, more than 90 percent of them male. Huxley honors writer Aldous, author of Brave New World, and other members of his distinguished family.

A unique combination of a surname feel and dainty femininity, Lacey is a favorite in the UK where it ranks in the Top 500. Likely derived from the name of a place in Normandy, it might occasionally be considered a diminutive to Wallace ("Welshman") or Larissa ("citadel").

The original spelling Lacy was once used for boys in the US, but Lacey has predominantly charted for girls, peaking in the 90s when it reached the Top 200. In the UK, it even made the Top 50 in 2010, having begun to climb the charts after actress Lacey Turner took up her role in the long-running soap, Eastenders back in 2004.

Also spelled Laci and Lacie, the name has seen a decline in popularity in recent years, though it remains a pretty choice.

Notable bearers include actress Lacey Chambert and wrestler Lacey Evans.

Emerald is the intriguing color and jewel name of the deep green stone treasured as far back as ancient Egypt — it's supposed to open one's heart to wisdom and to love and be good for strengthening relationships — which could make for an interesting, unusual name, particularly with the popularity of so many Em-starting names.
Emerald is the birthstone of May, making it extra appropriate for a girl born in that month. Some pleasant associations: the Emerald Isle and the Emerald City.
Esmeralda is the Spanish version.

For a generation, this name will always be linked to 1990s hit TV series Friends. Whether this is a positive or a negative will depend on your fondness for the show, and character Chandler Bing, but this name deserves consideration beyond these connotations: Chandler is a fresh take on the professional surname names.

A popular name in the Middle Ages, Evelina was eclipsed by Evelyn in the last century, but has a chance at a well-deserved comeback now, fitting right in with the other Ev-names. Like Evelyn, it derives from the Norman name Aveline.

Evelina

Originally a form of the saint's name Blaise, though now more likely to be a hot word name used for both sexes, though heavily weighted toward the boys. It has been in the boys' Top 1000 since the year 2000. On the pop culture side of things, Blaze Bayley is a singer and musician who has been connected to the bands Wolfsbane and Iron Maiden.

While Skylar is currently the most popular spelling choice for girls - and the spelling seen most often - the Skyler option is more (statistically) unisex. Given to boy and girls in nearly equal numbers each year, it ranks around the middle of the US Top 1000 and is given to more than 400 boys every year.

Derived from the Dutch surname Schuyler meaning "scholar", this spelling emerged in the 80s and was likely inspired by the popularity of the name Tyler.
