About Aliyah

Powerful and pretty, Aliyah is popular a name with two different origins.

It can be a feminine form of the Arabic name Ali, meaning "sublime, high" or "exalted." With a number of spelling variations, including Aleah, Aliya, and the most familiar to English-speakers, Aaliyah, it is a name with widespread usage, throughout the Middle East and in the US.

It can also be derived from the Hebrew word "alah", meaning "to rise" or "to ascend," and refers to the migration of Jews to Israel.

Popularised by the singer Aaliyah, Aliyah too has seen increased usage following her death in 2001. It now sits just outside the US Top 200.

Aliyah is also given to boys.

Pronounced uh-LEE-uh.

As of October 2026, Aliyah ranked #12225 in US births in 2019 SSA, peaked at #6542 in 2004.
