Predicting Starbaby Names of 2014

By Tara Ryazansky

We all took guesses at what the British royal baby would be named.  We brushed up on ‘K’ names to make bets at what Kimye would name their daughter.  I haven’t thought much about celebrity baby names now that George and North are here though, but it looks like 2014 is going to be a great year for famous baby names, judging by the pregnancies that have already been announced. I thought I’d make some predictions.

Actress Olivia Wilde & comedian, Jason Sudeikis are expecting their first child together.  Wilde is a stage name—her original surname being Cockburn, coming from a celebrated family of writers.  The choice of Wilde makes me think she has a clever sense of humor and might pick a name with an equally interesting namesake for her child–something bohemian or perhaps she will favor a nature name.  Since her partner is a writer and comedian, I expect that they will pick something compelling, with intellectual wit and hipster cool.
My guesses:  Ulysses, Beauregard, Vernon, Maude, Lake, Lavinia

Actress Kerry Washington and her husband, NFL cornerback, Nnamdi Asomugha are also expecting their first child together.  I am a big fan of Kerry Washington‘s (and of her Scandal character, Olivia Pope’s) style.  I am hoping that her baby naming style will be similar; an off-kilter classic.  People magazine named her the Best Dressed Woman of 2013– maybe she will be the best baby namer of 2014.  Perhaps they will pick something that honors her husband’s Nigerian heritage as well.
My guesses:  Alastair, Gideon, Tobias, Beatrice, Wina, Rosemary

Singers Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale are expecting their third child.  Baby will join brothers Kingston, 7 and Zuma, 5.  This couple has a love of place names– Kingston, Jamaica and Zuma Beach in Malibu obviously have special meaning for them.  Will they choose another place name or break tradition?  Maybe they will have a girl and pick something completely unlike their son’s names.  I could see them choosing  something with a connection to Japanese or Rastafarian culture.
My guesses: Mateo, Buju, Monterey, Irie, Anaheim, Airi

Playboy model, Kendra Wilkinson and NFL player, Hank Baskett are anticipating their second child next year.  They are parents to three-year-old Hank Baskett IV so there’s no telling what to expect from them as baby namers.  For whatever reason, I could see them using something unisex and simple.  Or maybe something with a bit of a bombshell vibe for a girl.  I don’t think she will pick something cutesy like her fellow Playmate, Holly did when she named her daughter Rainbow Aurora.  Maybe it will be another family name for the couple.
My guesses: Van, Wilkes, Wiley, Marlowe, Monroe, Ellison

Child star turned Mommy Blogger Soleil Moon Frye is expecting her third child with TV producer husband, Jason Goldberg.  Baby will join sisters Poet Sienna Rose and Jagger Joseph Blue.  I am expecting another trio of on-trend word or namesake names for baby number 3.  Will they pick something lyrical and sweet or gender-bending and rockerish?
My guesses: Rocco, Lennon, Wolf, Iris, Wren, Clementine

Stylish reality TV couple, Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman are expecting their second child.  They already have a fashionable son named SkylerSkyler is a nice choice for a boy.  It’s subtly naturey and has a surname sound.  I think that they will pick something else on-trend and soft sounding for a boy.  Their girl naming might be very different from their boy style though.  And let’s hope she has a girl to inherit her vintage collection!
My guessesMilo, Miles, Elias, Piper, Harper, Mila

I would love to hear any guesses or musings about what these celebs’ tastes in names might be.

Drew Barrymore is expecting baby no. 2 as well. Would love to hear your predictions for her.

OK @LauraJ88 I will take a few guesses!
Well, Drew Barrymore & her husband picked the name Olive when they were reading a book about pregnancy that told them their baby-to-be was the size of an olive at that stage! Hopefully they won’t try for a theme and pick something like Kumquat for baby #2!

The famous Barrymore clan has a lot of great family names. Drew is named after great-grandmother, Georgie Drew and her middle name, Blyth, is an old family surname. Beyond that, I think Drew would go for something flower-inspired, bright & fun and vintage.

girl name predictions: Georgia, Blythe, Marigold or Dorothy

boy name predictions: Reed, Rowan, Lionel or Huckleberry

What do you think?

I think Drew will go with something like Blossom or Lotus because she loves flowers so much if she has a girl.

Such an interesting read cannot wait too see whether your predications are true!

I think Olive & Lotus could work! I was kind of surprised by her choice with baby #1. I would’ve guessed Daisy or Poppy. Olive makes me expect something a bit more sophisticated & not at all princessy/sparkly pink.

Love these predictions! Soleil Moon Frye already announced she is having a boy, but Rocco, Lennon, and Wolf all sound spot on with her previous choices.

Great predictions!

I remember Rachel Zoe on her show saying that she’d like a sister for Skyler named Luna.

@minisia I think Luna & Skyler go well together. It makes me think of the night sky.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the Queen’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Zara and Mike Tindell name their child, as they’ll have much more freedom of choice than William and Catherine did. I’m hoping for something “exotic traditional” from them, like Henrietta or Benedict.

Zara & Mike Tindall’s baby will be joining cousins, Savannah & Isla. I hope they do go for something more exotic traditional. I love names that fit into that category!

I also, LOVE Olivia Pope’s fashion! I need her entire wardrobe. I agree, Kerry Washington probably has a beautiful naming style, and I’m interested to see what they go with.

Ok my guesses
Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis
Beauregard is too Southern and confederate linked and I don’t seem them using this one. The rest of those names seem more likely, but I think they’ll go with something less out there and on trend.
My predictions are:
Oscar, Earnest, Jack, Cecily, Mabel, Hester

Kerry Washington,
I could definitely see a more African or Nigerian name for their baby. I would be surprised if she picked Beatrice or Alastair, although I could be wrong. I also could see going more modern and on-trend.
Predictions: Milo, Leo, Fletcher, Posey, Lila, Afia

Gwen Steffani
your predictions seem good.
mine would be: Rocky (mountains), River, York, Amazon, Margarita, Maple

I don’t really know who the other people are mentioned in the blog, and certainly not well enough to guess their style.

I like your predictions for Drew’s daughter. I like Vera, Jill, Wren, for girls and Russell, Lionel, and Sawyer for boys.
For Zara and Tindell, I predict Betsy, Rosemary or Beatrice. For boys I like Benedict, Anthony and Colin.

@EmilyVA great guesses! Beauregard does have a Southern feel that the couple really doesn’t exude. I just think it’s quirky & cool like they seem to be. Maybe Bodhi would’ve been a better guess than Beauregard? It does feel more boho.

I love the Leo guess for Kerry. Maybe Leopold? I could see Gwen using a lion name as well.

Rachel Zoe just welcomed Kaius Jagger…well, it does rhyme with Elias!
