Pick a Boy-Girl Pair from the Top 1000

One thing we’re finding really mesmerizing about our gorgeous new Top 1000 U.S. names page is how easy it is to read across each line and compare the names of each gender that have the same rank.  Some of the pairs seems perfectly matched — Sarah and Henry at Number 43, for instance, or Cadence and Skyler at Number 290 — whereas other equally-ranked pairs feel discordant.

We can’t help thinking, as we survey the list, which pair we’d pick if we had a baby girl and a baby boy and had to choose their names from the same line.

Annabella and Lorenzo sound pretty great together, we think.   Or maybe Lilah and Beau, or Camilla and Zachariah.

But we’re really more interested in finding out which pair you’d pick, if you had to choose names for your only daughter and only son from the same popularity rank?  And why?  Do you really like both names equally, or do you simply think they make the most balanced set?

Here’s the link again to the new Top 1000 page: https://nameberry.com/search/popular_names

Totally fine to pick the same pair as someone else, and bonus points for telling us why you chose the pair you did!

Number 89 Violet and Tristan.
I like romantic names and they both have a romantic feel to them and are of comparable length. Violet may not be my first choice for a flower name, but I do love flower names and I think Violet pairs well with Tristan.

From the US list, I would pick Violet and Tristan, 89. It’s a little higher on the list than I usually like to stay, but it’s such a soft, romantic pair. I also thought Hazel and Kenneth, 175, were delightfully old-fashioned together.

From the Nameberry list, I think Astrid and Fox, 188, are striking, but I can’t explain why. I would happily name my own children Cressida and Barnaby, 224, or Rosalind and Desmond, 262.

If I’m playing by the rules, and only picking one sibset, I’d have to go with Rosalind and Desmond–not only are they lovely names individually, full of personality and tradition, but they sound dashing together!

On the US list I would say number 25-Lillian and Samuel. Of all the names I think they are most similar in style. I also think their short forms fit well, Lily and Sam. On the Nameberry list, number 9 Hazel and Jasper.

From the US list:
#401 Scarlet and Albert, it’s not my preferred spelling of Scarlet but I love both of these names individually and together.

From the nameberry list:
#623 Enid and Ike, I love the nickname Ike and the full name Enid, they sound great together. Ike could be an honour for my boyfriend, uncle and cousin who all share the same name and Enid reminds me of Enid Blyton’s books that I grew up reading.

Amorie & Halcyon #938 on Nameberry – I just think that (if you consider Amorie as a version of Amor) their meanings go well together
Clare & Amadeo #913 on Nameberry – They are known but not too common and they are classy
Nahla & Koda #905 on Nameberry – Nahla from the Lion King and Koda from Brother Bear
Roxanne & Floyd #903 on Nameberry – Roxanne the song by the Police and Floyd as in Pink Floyd
Marielle & Quade #818 on Nameberry – Not too well known but just cool names
Vivien & Mercer #776 on Nameberry – They are known but not too common and they are classy
Bethany & Abram #662 on Nameberry – Biblical
Tillie & Travis #612 on Nameberry – These would normally be too matchy but I like that they have the same first initial but totally different sounds
Marley & Elvis #609 on Nameberry – Bob Marley & Elvis Presley… need I say more?
Giana & Luciano #606 in US – Italian
Junia & Sterling #573 on Nameberry – They are known but not too common and they are classy and cool
Mercy & Valor #537 on Nameberry – virtue names
Hallie & Nico #525 in US – two of my favorite names
Harley & Rocco #415 in US – just cool names
Philippa & Peregrine #414 on Nameberry – I love the idea of siblings named Pippa and Penn

Callie & Corbin #221 in US – two of my favorite names

Just pointing out Peyton is #766 on Nameberry for both girls and boys…

I think I would go with 670& 702 for Noemi Adelina and Crosby Leonard. I also really like 832: Hadassah and Rashad together, but I couldn’t fit them with middles! Although a lot of names were entirely mismatched, I enjoyed seeing pairs like Luna/Luca and Raquel/Raphael match up at the same ranking.

578 – Harlow and Blaine

My nameberry top 1000 faves would be:

#44 Seraphina and Dashiell
These names also have the same romantic feel as my earlier picks Violet and Tristan and I am in love with Seraphina. I am presently surprised to see how well Dashiell goes with Seraphina as I never previously cared for the name. However Dashiell looks perfect next to Seraphina.

Honorable mention goes to
#125 Persephone and Django
Names I would probably never use but they feel like Nameberry GPs, so if the question was to pick a GP pair, I’d pick these two.

#66 Lucy & Jaxon
These would be cool kids.

#68 Autumn & Zachary
Picture twins. A & Z. Nice!

#75 Faith & Bentley
Very country and wholesome, yet still unique!

#81 Naomi & Xavier
Such hip, such cool

Violet and Tristan-I’ve never been a Violet fan (not once has any variant even graced my lists) in the past but when I sought out Tristan amongst the ranks and saw Violet next to it I wasn’t horrified. I actually agree with a previous commenter that they seem perfectly matched, and are ever so romantic. Swoon factor here.

Ava and William (Who I would call Liam) I had Liam Christopher selected before my husband was all ‘oooh Henrik” and then we had a girl. And Ava is my eldest daughter so I could absolutely see this for me.

Stella and Charles-I love these two together! Charles would absolutely be Charlie.

#675 Nellie (bright, shining one) and Gilbert (shining pledge)
could also be a nod to Canadian lit? Gilbert was a character in Anne of Green Gables and Nellie McClung wrote several novels, both fiction and non-fiction, along with being a suffragist.

#790 Eila and Perseus
I just love how they sound together

Amelia & Christopher
Nina & Finn

They are both similar in length and style.

On the US list I’ll go for
216 Cecilia and Xander …
and
292 Evangeline and Reid.
I might even pair them together
Cecilia Evangerline and Xander Reid??
both Cecilia and Xander have been thrown around for our baby’s name and love them together although I may use Alexander as a full with nn Xander.

On the nameberry list
671 Cecelia (again!!) and Elio (which I’ve never heard of before but love the sound of especially with Cecelia)
and
157 Maddox and Valentina (both of which we are considering as middle names, Maddox due to hubby’s welsh heritage and Valentina/Valentine because we found out we were pregnant on Valentines day
again as Cecelia is a favourite of mine I might pair these
Cecelia Valentina (although I prefer Valentine as it’s too matchy) and Elio Maddox

As I’m from the UK I did a quick sweep of the top 100 on which I’d try not to choose a name, my favourite girl is Daisy but can’t see myself ever using David!!
so…
82 Heidi and Finley, cute and slightly matchy

sarah15 Says:

Arlo and Isabel at number 100.

I love both of these names, and want to name my son (who arrives in 4 days!!!) Arlo, although I’m still trying to convince my husband… If we had a girl next, her name would most likely be Isabel as my husband and I both really like it.

I also like the fact that they are both Spanish names and would go well with our eldest son’s name, Xavier 🙂

From the US list my favorites are:
Lilah & Beau — Cute!
Claire & Hunter — There is just something simple, honest and warm about these names together.
Esther & Elliot
Iris & Drew — These aren’t the same style, but I like them together for some reason.
Skye & Alec
Bridget & Lawrence — Sophisticated, and familiar but uncommon
Viviana & Ryland — Love these names and they sound great together.
Annika & Franklin — Picture twins. Swoon.

Azalea & Clinton

My favorite would have to be Annika & Franklin.

On the US top 1000: #239- Adeline and Trenton. Adeline is gorgeous, it’s noble, and it’s the French diminutive of Adele. Adele, the singer, is extremely important to me and her music has helped me get through rough times. Trenton has always been a name I’ve treasured. “Trent” is so adorable with “Addie”.

On the Nameberry top 1000: #257- Marigold and Edmund. Marigold is my absolute favorite M name and I love that I could call her Maggie! Edmund is such a classic and “Maggie” and “Ned” would be uber cute together!

I love a lot of the combos towards the beginning, so I wanted to move closer to the ends of the lists for a larger challange

615: Gracelynn and Jefferson on the US list
I am picturing a sibset from the US south. Jefferson is the older brother and he goes by Jeffie to his mama and little sister, Jeff to his dad and friends, and Jefferson, because it is a good old southern name, to his grandparents. Then little Gracelynn came along. It reminds me of Graceland, first of all, plus it is the double first name that is so popular, AND has the cutest southern belle nickname of Gracie.
731: Geneva and Nikoli on the Nameberry list
I picture a family that jet sets or at least takes a vacation abroad each year. Geneva has a few cute nicknames: Gennie, Eva, Evie; and has the benefit of being a very sophisticated name. It is an easily recognizable and pronouncable name. Nikoli has the same benefits as his sister: Nik, Nikki.

Fiona & Seth (a little quirky, outgoing, fitting at all stages of life)
Esme & Franco (artsy, artsy, artsy!)

Apparently I have an affinity for F names!

These are three sets I would actually use, although Seth is the name of my brother-in-law. The girls names are memorable and feminine, but not over the top girly like a lot of the other Top 1000 girls names. The boys are steadfast and straightforward.

I’ll come back to do the Nameberry Top 1000. This was so fun!

Naomi and Xavier – 81 (I love Naomi, and Xavier is an unexpected, yet awesome brother for her!)

Hailey and Caleb – 32 (Have always loved Caleb. I was never into Hailey, but the sound of them together with the alliteration of the ‘a’s is just amazing. They’d even make perfect twins!)

Rebecca and Edward – 157 (Incredibly classy and well matched.)

Tessa and Zion – 235 (Sounds like an awesome pair, even though neither one is one of my favorites or even my style.)

Chelsea and Charlie – 233 (Adorable as a pair of pets, say dogs or rabbits.)

And from the bottom of the list…
Elianna and Elisha – 732 (Great pair, I love the alliteration and the Hebrew roots.)

Jenny and Heath – 863 (While I don’t think Jenny is a full name in itself, the combo as they sound is very nice. Heath also always reminds me of a Heath Bar, but that aside, I think it’s a nice sounding combo.)

** I actually know a brother and sister set of Benjamin and Lily (#16!)

It’s also interesting how the Luna / Luca and Raquel / Raphael pairings chart at the same place.

On the US list, I’m going to have to go with Adele and Frederick. Honorable mentions to:

Cora and Wesley
Emilia and Edgar
Georgia and Fabian
Veronica and Felix
Jemma and Hank
Estella and Marcel
Esme and Franco

Anna and Samuel
Pippa and Otto
Flora and Calvin
Daenerys and Caspian
Freya and Tarquin

I also love 231 Lola and Drake, 165 Valentina and Emmanuel, 275 Sabrina and Donovan, 316 Veronica and Felix, 331 Carmen and Julius, 526 Sylvia and Quinton, 528 Annika and Franklin, 558 Eve and Dorian, 658 Matilda and Tomas, 823 Coraline and Hezekiah, 883 Juniper and Rolando, and 929 Thalia and Truman. I’d be most likely to use either Winter and Ariel, Lola and Drake, Sabrina and Donovan, or Sylvia and Quinton (nn Quin).

From the Nameberry list, there are so many I’m going to narrow it to those I would use on a pair of g/b twins tomorrow. 9 Hazel and Jasper, 257 Marigold and Edmund, 80 Lola and John (nn Jack), 232 Natalia (nn Talia) and Atlas, 203 Marina and Wilder, 211 Odette and Sage, 108 Eva and Thaddeus, 37 Eloise and Josiah, 32 Matilda and Benjamin, 44 Seraphina and Dashiell. 231 – Lola & Drake (Lola isn’t a favorite, but I think it sounds cool with Drake)
NB51 – Eliza & Arthur (I would use these in a heartbeat)
NB104 – Pippa & Otto
NB395 – Petra & Theon

Others I could see as sibs:

278 – Sierra & Dante

312 – Bianca & Louis

US: I’m not a Top 1000 type of gal. The only combo I actually like:
#151- Elise & Jesse
Both are on my go-to mn list. Jesse is a family name and I love Elise just because. They’re uncommon yet well-known; old classics yet fresh

Honorable mentions: #746- Galilea & Vincenzo; #312- Bianca & Louis
Gorgeous pairs but I wouldn’t actually use

NB: This list is more my style
#196 Lark & River
They are on my favorites list and I would absolutely use them for sibs. Lark & River could be B/B or G/B (River feels too masculine so I wouldn’t give to a girl)

#714 Romilly & Dorian
Also favorites. Romilly & Dorian could be B/G, G/B, or B/B (don’t think I’d use the set for 2 girls)

Honorable mentions: #414- Philippa & Peregrine; #950- Winslet & Adlai
All 4 are GPs, although I can see using them (mn only)

#419 — Cynthia and Orion
#473 — Tatiana and Warren
#526 — Sylvia and Quinton
#783 — Jayde and Leonidas (I really hate this spelling of Jade but I love the pair)
#820 — Lilith and Killian

My favorite of all of those is Tatiana and Warren. My second favorite is Jayde and Leonidas.

101 Maria & Jesus
830 Rihanna & Lyric

Favourites from the US list:

291 Nina & Finn
316 Veronica & Felix
435 June & Ari
448 Skye & Alec
521 Dahlia & Nash
702 Adelina & Leonard
932 Saige & Hugh
958 Akira & Mack
977 Esme & Franco
980 Gisselle & Simeon
993 Analia & Apollo

My favourite overall would have to be 448: Skye & Alec for the matching length, similar or complimentary sounds and Scottish origin. Both are also known but not common.
Interestingly my runner up would be 958: Akira & Mack, for the same reasons!

I already have a 3 year old daughter named Brianna. I was surprised to see it as just outside the top 50 at 51. I do really like the boys name Aaron also at 51. I have actually considered it as a name if we ever have a little boy. I think it does flow well together…Brianna and Aaron. On the Nameberry list however Brianna is ranked with Justice. A name I do like but would never consider it for a child of my own. I’m just not that ballsy I guess.

Have to agree with earlier posters that Tristan and Violet are hard to top in terms of “feels-right”-dom; I was also a fan of Charles and Stella, or Christopher and Amelia, or even Noah and Olivia, despite my disinclination toward Top 10s as a general rule. Also, Colin and Mary for the Secret Garden reference would be clever… as others have said here, I just have too many favorites!

That said, the ones I think I’d have to pick for my own children, all other things being equal, are Fiona and Seth: two of my Top 5 names happening to fall at the same number, it just seems like fate 😉

from the US list my favourites are:
Rosemary & Dayton (603)
Tabitha & Ronin (771)
Meadow & Kohen (951)
I’d be most likely to use Meadow & Kohen for my kids, partially because I like that they’re lower on the list and therefore less common. I also just really like the names individually! Meadow is always on the top of my list, and Kohen is cool and sophisticated.

from the Nameberry list my favourites are:
Agnes & Lennox (169)
Linden & Oriana (474)
Blossom & Leland (760)
again I’d be most likely to go with the least common couple- Blossom & Leland- because of uniqueness and also the way the names sound together. like a prince & princess from a fantasy world! I love names that sound whimsical and sweet.

(the reason Agnes & Lennox made my list is because Lennox is my absolute favourite boys’ name; Agnes is pretty, but not my fave.)

Isabel & Leo*
Autumn & Zachary
Cora & Wesley*
Cecilia & Xander*
Juliana & Sawyer
Rosalie & Damon
Elsa & Cullen
Tenley & Kash (I’m not a big fan of either name, but I think they go together really well)
Zara & Kieran*
Lily & Benjamin
Stella & Charles*
Maya & Thomas
Bella & Cameron
Lilah & Beau

*I would consider using these

768 – Wendy and Crew – how sweet and British is that?!
160 – Josephine and Axel – a current fave girl name just happened to be paired with a boy name I like. Plus, my husband really likes hardcore masculine names, so this is a pair we might actually use.

What a fun game!

For the US top 1000, I really loved (209) Fiona and Seth and (155) Cora and Wesley. They seemed to really match each other’s spunk and spirit. Cora a and Wesley would be my top pick, though.

For the Nameberry top 1000, I also loved the pair with Cora! (4) Cora and Oliver sound so lovely together, I’m adding them to my list for the future! (21) Maisie and Owen were a close second.

It came down to two for me.

#62 Stella and Charles.
I sought out Charles from the U.S. list and saw that Stella was it’s pair. Charles is my favorite boy name and has been since I was a child. While Stella is not my favorite girl name, I do think it is beautiful and has a lovely meaning.

#291 Nina and Finn.
I have always thought Nina was such a sweet name that will work at every age. And Finn is a name that I have been loving recently.

If I had to choose just one though, it would be Stella and Charles so I could have a Charlie 🙂

#551 Cullen & Elsa

#430: Carolina and Porter. I never thought of these names, let alone putting them together. But when I hear them, I imagine a very well-decorated Pottery Barn nursery with those embroidered blankets. You totally know what I mean.

Nameberry:
There were so many that it was tough to narrow down.
#68: Stella and Charles. Stella is my favorite name and Charles honors family. What could be better?
#430 (coincidence): Constance and Kellen. I just really like those together.

From the Namberry list:
60. Harlow & August: a sibset belonging to literature and movie loving parents
138. Freya & Tarquin: Scones, weekends in the country, and their very own family tartan.
145. Lux & Byron: could easily be used as inspiration for their parents’ stationer’s shop.
312. Cosima & Nero: their parents met at a library whilst researching for their Greco-Roman History thesis papers.

From the US 1000:
134. Isabel & Leo: compatible, classic, clean.
330. Tatum & Milo: incredibly hipster.
722: Maia & Ray: randomly works.

I started at the bottom and worked my way up.

On the US list:

919 – Kai and Lucca – They sound really good in my head. I can see the person that names their daughter Kai, naming their son Lucca.
897 – Renee and Valentin – They have a similar feel, to me.
830 – Rihanna and Lyric – That’s just funny to me because Rihanna is a singer and songs have lyrics.
800 – Mara and Tristin – Only because these two names have become my personal favorites and so I’ve paired them before, though I spell it Tristan
788 – Kimber and Kolby – The hard C and the similar feel make them a match for me
744 – Rylan and Roland – Alliteration, my friends. (Not always, 743 – Kailee and Kareem don’t sound like a pair to me)
658 – Matilda and Tomas – I’m really not sure. They just feel similar to me
626 – Raquel and Raphael – They sound so much alike, I had to put them on here
606 – Giana and Luciano – They both sound Italian
415 – Harley and Rocco – They both sound tough to me. Rebels born to be wild
359 – Kira and Tristen – Another pair I’ve personally made because of my adoration of both names (Again, Tristan spelling, though)
302 – Briana and Emilio – Both sound like they’d be big in the Hispanic community (This is my brother’s name… Briana is not my name but it sounds more compatible than mine, Irene!)
292 – Evangeline and Reid – I don’t know why… They just work for me.
262 – Rose and Clayton – Sound just works well together
216 – Cecilia and Xander – Again with the sound.
144 – Amy and Sean – Both are simple, no fuss names
86 – Eva and Jace – Not a combination I’d thought of before, but I like it
33 – Leah and Christian – Sound, again
16 – Lily and Benjamin – Cute combo

Nameberry List:
946 – Kiki and Bailey – I didn’t think so when I first heard it but as I started to pass it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it
776 – Vivien and Mercer – Sound again just works well together
628 – Serafina and Emmanuel – Sound like they’d work well together. Especially since they both have nicknames that sound common for not so common whole names, Sara and Manny
537 – Mercy and Valor – Uh, need I say more?
383 – Lucille and Gunner – I don’t know why I like this together. Maybe it’s a contrast thing. Lucille is soft and dainty and Gunner sounds tough and rugged.
343 – Verity and Lazarus – I don’t think it’s great but the hard consonants, V and Z, mixed with the r sound makes it work for me.
261 – Cosette and Lysander – I have no idea why, it just works for me.
213 – Lorelei and Finnigan – I really like this combination
139 – Elise and Landon – These sound beautiful together!
88 – Julia and Nathan – Classic names that sound well together.
79 – Piper and Nathaniel – Another set of classic names that work well together
32 – Matilda and Benjamin – Third set of classic names that work really well together.
26 – Scarlett and Liam – This combo is funny to me cause there are two characters on Nashville with these names that were hooking up
23 – Lucy and Wyatt – Fourth set of classic names that sound really well together. This is probably my favorite of the group
Almost every combo in the top 10 work for me.
9 – Hazel and Jasper – Quirky but cute
8 – Claire and Bodhi – I don’t know why I like these two together but I do
7 – Amelia and Finn – Adorable
6 – Violet and Silas – Soft and sweet
5 – Penelope and Henry – Yet another classic pairing
3 – Isla and Atticus – Another combination that works well but I’m not sure why
2 – Charlotte and Declan – Another TV show pairing (Revenge)

These are in no particular order for which I think go together best to worst, it was just the order I saw them in.
268: Emilia/Edgar: I can just see these two as old people sitting on the porch playing cards and drinking iced tea. Haha
50: Ashley/Tyler: These stood out to me as incredibly 90s names!
853: Larissa/Gibson: This pair seemed to fit together incredibly well – then I remembered I actually know someone named Laurissa Gibson!
792: Destinee/Justus: To me, this is two names I would never use in the first place, plus they are spelled wrong (though I know Justus is an old spelling).
745: Ellen/Ben: These just seem to go together. Also could be a little 90s, but I think I was drawn to them more because they are both short forms of longer names: Helen/Eleanor and Benjamin.
665: Mira/Urijah: There are characters in the Divergent series named Mira and Uriah, so these felt like they paired together well.
634: Lylah/Dax: I’m not really sure why these stood out together for me, but they did!
364: Eloise/Emerson: This one I was like “yes!” because they seem like the perfect pair for some reason. I love the fact that they have some of the same letters, but they are used differently within the name, the alliteration is great, and they have the same syllable count! Perfect!
343: Adelaide/Leland

406- Rosalie & Damon
430- Carolina & Porter
551- Elsa & Cullen
552- Farrah & Madden
791- Paloma & Fletcher
977- Esme & Franco

I would have a hard time deciding between Isabel & Leo, Elsa & Cullen, and Paloma & Fletcher.

Isabel & Leo are the closest to the names on my long list, but if I were only going to have the two I might go for Paloma & Fletcher.

Felix and Veronica (#316) are the pair I’d be most likely to use for real, but Nina and Finn (#291) are right up there too.

Combos I’d adore on someone else’s kids: Lillian and Samuel (#25), Sarah and Henry (#43), Stella and Charles (#62), Violet and Tristan (#89), Elise and Jesse (#151), Harmony and Theodore (#197), Lola and Drake (#231), Iris and Drew (#282), Bianca and Louis (#312), Olive and Knox (#368), Lucille and Keaton (#394), Harlow and Blaine (#578).

Pairs that don’t match particularly well but are weirdly charming to me: Abbie and Bruno (#790), Aliza and Frankie (#877).

A few combos seem like sibsets from past from past eras: Amber and Dean (#260), Crystal and Danny (#384), Marilyn and Russell (#426), Deborah and Harvey (#797), Jenny and Heath (#863), Joyce and Todd (#892).

The incongruous pairing that made me laugh when I skimmed past it was #610, Isis and Joey.

I can’t even do the Nameberry list, I’d be here all day.

jaimetanae Says:

From the US, there were 4 I ended up liking but since I’m only picking for my own hypothetical children, I chose #291 Nina & Finn (I like the shortness, and they’re both classic and easy), #330 Tatum & Milo (these 2 are my ‘hipster’ pair, love the feel).

From Nameberry I love a ton of those names, just not the pair I found them in! My 2 favorites were #150 Vera & Caius (I actually know a real life sibset with these names. I like the history and how strong and classic they are) #217 Annora & Bastian (I don’t know why, but I love this. It’s another ‘hipster’ choice, but a little more regal than my US pair!)
