Movie Character Names: Oscar nominations for this year’s best
The Golden Globe nominations are out and the Oscar hopefuls will soon follow, but somehow or other they’ve neglected to even consider a key category: the most interesting, innovative character names of 2009.
So we’ve put together a list of possible nominees. Of course, since there were more than 700 movies released (or about to be) this year, we couldn’t get to see every cast list of every native and foreign film, but we did look at most of the major releases. In the list below, you’ll find some quirky sci-fi choices and exotic options from other cultures. Some of the names will be familiar from previous Harry Potter and Twilight and Star Trek franchises, so we tread lightly there. And there’s the usual caveat–we make no moral judgments, so both good guys and bad guys, saints and sinners are included.
AGNESS — It’s Complicated
BLISS — Whip It
CORBI — Whip It
ÉLOÏSE — Summer Hours

Valentin & Bruno for my boys, Clarissa & Hattie (Henrietta) for my girls. Agnes, with one S would be runner up!
But my favorite movie name/combo of all time is James Tiberius. *sigh* so lovely.

The pros and cons of Luna are currently being discussed in the Talk About Names forum:
I’m thinking of taking Luna for my screen middle name: “Nephele Luna” — hahaha!

I kind of love Aldo. Until the movie, it made me think footwear. Now? It makes me think Brad Pitt at his coolest.
As for girls, I’d give the Oscar to Bliss, with an honorable mention for Eloise. Jennifer Aniston played an Eloise in Love Happens earlier this year … but I don’t think that movie is likely to garner any nominations.

I vote for Pippa and Bruno. But I really didn’t love the movie “Bruno”. Loved “Borat” though. Haven’t seen “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”.

I vote for Agness for a girl and Aro for the boy.

Best female name: Vittoria.
While I didn’t care for the movie nearly as much as the book, the name became a quick favorite of mine after finishing “Angels and Demons.”
Best male name: Darwin.
I really love this name and the wonderful connection it has to Charles Darwin. Although the G-Force movie looked stupid, they chose a great name 🙂 Haha
Agness, Coraline, Bruno (the movie, while emotionally traumatizing, had a great meaning behind it), and Aldo.

I’d honestly use Nyota (Uhura’s first name, Star Trek.)
