Yeshua

OriginVariation of Joshua, Hebrew
Meaning"the Lord is my salvation"

About Yeshua

Yeshua is often considered the "real" name of Jesus, via the Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English evolution of Yeshua to Iesous to Iesus to Jesus. It is also used as a common alternative of Yehoshua in the later parts of the Hebrew Bible, making it a variation of Joshuah.

Rarely used in the US as a given name until the 2000s, it has climbed considerably in recent years, and as of 2024, it entered the US Top 1000 for the first time, when it was given to 229 boys. Popular worship song, Yeshua (my beloved is most beautiful), might have inspired more parents to choose this option

With a slightly softer sound than Joshua, it could help avoid the (almost inevitable) nickname Josh.

Pronounced yeh-SHOO-uh.

As of October 2026, Yeshua ranked #1007 in US births in 2025 SSA, peaked at #982 in 2024.

Editor's take: The name Yeshua is a boy's name of Yiddish origin meaning "the Lord is my salvation".
