Xochitl Origin and Meaning

The name Xochitl is a girl's name of Native American origin meaning "flower".

Xochitl is a Nahuatl -- or Aztec -- floral name used in southern Mexico and pronounced so-chat-l. Internet entrepreneur Xochi Birch is probably the best-known bearer in the US -- except for the Xochitl brand tortilla chips. Definitely among the most exotic flower names and a fascinating if somewhat difficult choice.

On the Xochitl tortilla chip bags, it says the pronunciation is "So-Cheel". Pretty and different.

That's really cool! My daughter just learned to say her middle name while down in Mexico.

jenni_lynn91 Says:

The real pronunciation is Sho-cheecl, which is hard to say. ZO-chee is an easier way to say it. I tell people not in my husband's family to say ZO-chee.

jenni_lynn91 Says:

I don't know where they got the zo-chat-l pronunciation from, but the real way to say it in my husband's language is Sho-cheecl or Zo-cheecl.

This is one of my nieces' name. Hers is pronounced 'zo-cheel', though, but everyone calls her Zoi or 'zo-chee'. Definitely one of my sister's more exotic choices, but gorgeous nonetheless! :)

I love the "ZO-chee" pronunciation! Is there a standard way to pronounce?

I have known many people with this name, and the only pronunciation I've heard was 'zo-chee' or 'so-chee' and personally I prefer this pronunciation to zo-chat-l

This was my name in Spanish class in high school.

I adore the sound of this name but I wish there was an acceptable anglecized spelling :(

Thanks - I wouldn't have had a clue how to pronounce otherwise

My favorite brand of tortilla chips!!

This is my daughter's middle name. The pronunciation in Nahuatl is like Sho-cheecl because the X makes a SH sound and TL makes a sound like CL. An easier pronunciation is Zo-chee.
