Tatum Origin and Meaning

The name Tatum is a girl's name of English origin meaning "Tate's homestead".

Tatum is strong, distinctive, energetic, and recommended, especially if your last name is as congenial as O'Neal. The name is now used for both genders, with the balance running about two to one in favor of the girls.

Though this surname became a first in the nineteenth century, it didn't become a ranked American girls' name until 1994, two decades after Tatum O'Neal won her Best Supporting Oscar at the age of ten. It seems to be on a slight downward trend, having fallen out of the Top 400 in 2015 for the first time since 2002.

Rose McGowan played a Tatum in the movie Scream. As a surname, Tatum is now strongly associated with popular actor Channing; in the past it was jazz pianist Art.

Y'all here dissing my name. "Oh, let's look up my name on Nameberry. It'll be fun."
"Tatum is a clunky, non-cute, masculine name and her mom must be obsessed with Channing Tatum."

clairels Says:

In that case, she should choose Channing, it's a much better name.

indiefendi2 Says:

This name is so clunky but not in a cute way--in a curt way. Tate by itself is much more appealing.

I met a girl called Tatum. I'm not sure how I feel about it: it looks strange and not very feminine: for a boy, perhaps? Idk how I feel about Tatum.

priviledgedpistachios Says:

I love it for both genders, but I see it as more of a boy's name

pharlie Says:

My daughter's name is Tatum (born before Channing Tatum became famous) and I also liked the "bringer of joy" definition. My daughter is beautiful, happy and full of life. I love that it's uncommon but not unusual. Most importantly, she loves her name.

SimoneKadele Says:

One of the few unisex names I like, though it's still NMS.

Plutophelia Says:

It does! tate means happiness and this means "tate's homestead" so I suppose by extension it does. I've hated this name for EVER but it is kind of growing on me. I love when names are given with a purpose.

Zoey_Artemisia Says:

If I ever met a girl with this name I'm going to think that her mother's obsessed with Channing Tatum.

Purpleprincess75 Says:

We named our daughter Tatum in 2013, it's not necessarily the prettiest of names (according to some books means bringer of joy & after a lot of sorrow we were happy with this meaning) but definitely a strong name and so is she. Despite being little for her age, she's very lively, energetic, smiley & most of all happy, who cares what her name is that's all we could wish for :)

jasminegarden Says:

One of my favourite names of all time, I would love to have a daughter named Tatum :) Scream is my favourite film as well & Rose McGowan is one of my favourite actresses so Tatum Riley was an influence on this name for me - she was very pretty, strong & friendly, a worthy namesake in my opinion, as I'm a massive fan of horror movies.

Same. I just can't get my head around it for a girl. I'm not really a fan for either gender anyway. It's nms.
