For a long time, I admit that I didn't particularly like this name. I didn't think it was bad, but I just couldn't see the appeal, because the only thing that it seemed to offer was the mental-image of a slimy little amphibian. But, then I watched Fantastic Beasts and in the space of 2 hours my opinion of this name completely changed!

Not only do I think that Eddie Redmayne is a fantastic actor, but the character that he played in the movie was so awkwardly down-to-Earth and likeable. As such, I now attribute those aspects to the name. It just suddenly seems to be such a sweet and charming oddball of a choice, and while I don't think I'd ever use it for a child, if anyone else wanted to use Newt, I'd be more than happy to give my support! After all, if people are naming their boys Wolf, Fox, Bear and Sparrow etc., why not Newt?

Well, it takes it one stage further than Kermit, and people were willing to defend that name on here. I think I prefer Newt to Kermit...! 😀

Teasing possibilities abound when you're named after a slimy, lizardlike amphibian (I do love newts, just not as a name).
