I have a friend who is a Kenyan Kikuyu and her name is Makena, and she pronounces her name "mah-KEN-ah". I don't mean to devalue what you are saying, though, I'm sure it has different pronunciations in different countries, as it is very much a multicultural name.

This is not the same name as McKenna or Makenna for a matter of fact. It is pronounced as MA-KAY-NA. The middle syllable sound like the letter K. That's the correct way.

Makena is not just an alternate spelling to McKenna, it is an Eastern African name. I have heard that it means "happy one" in the language Kikuyu, but I can't confirm that.
