So my family derives the name "Ila" spelled like this from the Hungarian name "Ila," which means "light" or "bringer of light." I named my daughter Ila - with the Hungarian derivation in mind. I read that it was an old Hungarian form of "Helen," which also means "light." I don't feel an affinity for the meaning "island" or "of the island." It's fine, but I'll take "light." We pronounce it "Ay-luh" just like the French "Isla." I guess that the Hungarian derivation can be pronounced differently...maybe that's why Nameberry decided only to post the French derivation? I think both should be listed...especially since the spelling I L A is the same as the Hungarian name...

Love this name. I pronounce Ila as ee-la and would consider using this instead of Isla as it's popularity rises :)

Ila was my grandmother's name and I hope one day I will have a daughter to name after her. Interestingly, according to Baby Name Wizard, Ila was ranked 251 in first decade of the 1900s.

I imagine that some folks will have trouble with the pronunciation and some will think we were going for a creative spelling since it is pronounced the same as the currently more popular "Isla". But I don't think that will be too bad. I'm sure the Isla spelling gets mispronounced all the time too
