Gender: Female Meaning of Donna: "lady" Origin of Donna: Italian

Donna Origin and Meaning

The name Donna is a girl's name of Italian origin meaning "lady".

Literally meaning "lady" in Italian, Donna was the perfect ladylike housewife mom name on The Donna Reed Show in the fifties and sixties. And there were plenty of namesakes: Donna was in the Top 10 in 1964. These days we'd be more likely to associate it with the emanciatpated clothes of Donna Karen than as a baby name.

Though it seems to have a midcentury date stamp, Donna goes back to at least the late nineteenth century, reaching the Top 100 in 1926 and the Top 20 in the 1940s. In 1960, Donna was the fifth most popular name in the United States. Off the charts now, Donna is still remebered as the subject/object of many pop songs, and via the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, and current bestselling author Donna Tartt.

A very great throwback name that I would love to see revived. I love the 50s/60s Brooklyn vibe I get from this Italian classic.

I love this name, and I might use it if it showed signs of being revived somewhat.

I would love for this name to come back but I don't think it's quite ready yet.

I think you may want to get out more in terms of naming, my dear. Colleen, Elle, Guy, Adam, Andrew, Martha, Donna, all mean 'lady' or 'man'. It's commonly done.

Who would literally name their daughter "woman"? That's like "hi this is my son Man". I don't get it.

I used to really love this name until unedited footage of a bear. Now it's eerie...

I'm not sure about this name, love the way it looks though! Not a bad one to put on my list.

I would like this name better if people pronounced it the authentic Italian way not this American "dah-na" mess.

I never liked this name before, but it has grown on me. I loved Donna Reed in It's a Wonderful Life and I like its soothing and calm sound, not unwelcome in this chaotic world.
