Belle Origin and Meaning

The name Belle is a girl's name of French origin meaning "beautiful".

Belle has nothing but positive associations, from "belle of the ball" to "Southern belle" to the heroine of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. As if this weren't enough good things, Belle is also one of the most familiar and usable names that mean beautiful. Though it has been overshadowed by the Twilight-influenced Bella and longer forms like Isabella and Annabella, Belle has its own Southern charm and would make a pretty choice as a first or middle name.

Belle was a Top 100 name in the 1880s, but left the list in 1934. It returned to the US Top 1000 for the first time in 80 years in 2016. Its most famous bearer was the legendary Western outlaw, Belle Starr (born Myra); Belle Watling is a character in Gone With the Wind.

Very nice name. I love it! It suits my needs well.

AnneliseNoelle Says:

My daughters middle name is Belle, I think that it's lovely as a middle for a longer name.

Jazzy7 Says:

I like this both as a first and middle name! It is easier to pair it as a middle name tho.

Thepandaprincess223 Says:

Love this name personally I think it is less harsh sounding than Bella. Belle does not need to be a middle name and can be a strong yet beautiful sounding first name. My favourite highfinated name with Belle in it is the sweet sounding Annie-Belle

jaz.fortune Says:

Our daughter's middle name is going to be Belle. We debated on Rose or Belle. We just loved the meaning and the ring it added to any name. Belle is also going to honor my last sibling who was named Isabella. Truly a beautiful soul like Belle's meaning. Plus, Belle was one of my favorite Disney princesses! Can't wait to watch Beauty and Beast with my daughter and get her a Belle doll at the Disney store :)

ClimenceAliceMarie Says:

Belle is the shortened version of the longer form that I have wanted to use for a long time.
I have ALWAYS loved the name Belle, thanks to Beauty and the Beast.

ChantilleElla Says:

Hopefully this name becomes more widely-used after 2017's live action Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson. I personally wouldn't use Belle, but I wish more people would, it's absolutely charming.

indiefendi2 Says:

Beautiful Belle: upstanding, lovely, simple, and not ruined by pop culture like her twin Bella

Saffron_Rice Says:

Lovely for a middle name. I don't find too many B names I like.

DanielaBorges Says:

Belle makes such a cute middle name for a little girl, I love it.

StrawberryLoo Says:

It is Belle.... NOT Belly. I think people can tell the difference.

PineWarrior Says:

It's . . . 'okay'. . . only because of the Disney Princess. But it's one letter off from the word 'belly' which is what is keeping me from going crazy over this name.

Caroline Says:

Me also!

Bri21 Says:

I prefer this name over Bella. It is simple, pretty and feminine.

kiki Says:

I think bella sounds better

Alicia1 Says:

This is a great name, so soft and feminine. I much prefer it to the overused Bella.

sophiesilly Says:

I want to change my name to this, I love it so much. I thankfully have that opportunity, with my middle name being Isabel. I love the name's simplicity - plus, who doesn't want to be named after a princess?

kitchi1 Says:

I love the femininity of this name! Beautiful!

leonoras Says:

It's sad Beauty and the Beast hasn't brought this name back.
