Mavi is both a gender-neutral Turkish name with a colorful meaning and a Spanish short form of the double name, Maria Victoria. Also the name of a jeans company, it would be pronounced as MAH-vee in Turkish and as either MA-bee or MA-vee in Spanish, depending on your location.

Mavi has also been gaining attention in the US, possibly among Spanish speaking families but potentially also as a playful spin on the popular Maeve, in the style of Novi, Jovie, and Navy. In this case, it may well be said as MAY-vee.

Historically more popular for boys and generally less familiar than its sound-alike Rowan, Roan is a name with multiple meanings, origins, and pronunciations. Given to less than 10 girls back in 2023, time will tell if singer-songwriter Chappell Roan has brought the name more exposure.

On one hand, Roan — said with two syllables — is simply a spelling variation of stylish Rowan, connected to both the red-berried tree, and to the Irish Ruadhán meaning "little red head". Alternatively, it's a Frisian name that rhymes with Joan, ultimately derived from the German element hraban meaning "raven"

Roan can also be considered a word name, used to describe the coats of horses and other animals that are white mixed with another tone such as red or chestnut, again said with a single syllable.

The distinctive 'X' beginning gives this name an edgy, modern appeal while maintaining the friendly, playful sound of its original form. Zoey itself derives from the Greek name Zoe, meaning 'life.' This alternative spelling has emerged in recent decades as parents increasingly seek unique ways to personalize classic names. While still relatively uncommon, Xoey appeals to families looking for names that stand out both visually and phonetically. The name carries the same cheerful, vibrant associations as Zoey but with an added element of individuality and distinction.

The distinctive 'y' spelling gives the name a unique visual appeal while maintaining familiar pronunciation. Aryn emerged in the United States during the late 20th century when alternative spellings became fashionable. While never extremely common, it appeals to parents seeking names with traditional roots but contemporary styling. The name projects qualities of strength and individuality while remaining accessible and easy to pronounce.

This Celtic goddess and Arthurian name may sound terminally old-ladyish to many ears--but so did names like Ella and Etta not so long ago. So Enid is yet another forgotten four-letter E-possibility: she's has been M.I.A since 1954.
You might not know it to look at her, but Enid is Welsh, from the word meaning 'life' or 'soul.' Back in the Age of Chivalry, to call a woman 'a second Enid' was the greatest of compliments, as she was a legendary romantic figure, revived in Tennyson's Idyll of the Kings. In more modern times, Enid is the title of a Bare Naked Ladies song and a quirky character in the quirky film Ghost World.

Levy as a feminine name represents a fresh, contemporary choice that's gaining attention in recent years. Originally a Jewish surname derived from the Hebrew tribe of Levi, whose members were assistants to priests in the Temple, it has been repurposed as a given name for girls. The name carries a light, airy quality with its short two-syllable structure and pleasant 'ee' ending sound. Levy for girls embodies a modern trend toward using surnames and traditionally masculine names for females. While still uncommon as a feminine name, it offers a blend of spiritual heritage and contemporary style. The name's brevity and friendly sound appeal to parents seeking something distinctive yet accessible, with potential nicknames like Lev or Levi providing flexibility.

Lyza is a feminine name that serves as a modern, streamlined variant of Elizabeth, Eliza, or Lisa. With its crisp, contemporary spelling, Lyza offers a fresh take on these traditional names while maintaining their essential sound and character. The name is concise yet melodic, with the 'z' adding a distinctive touch of uniqueness. Elizabeth, from which Lyza ultimately derives, has Hebrew origins meaning 'God is my oath' or 'God's promise.' As a shorter form, Lyza strips away some of the formal quality of Elizabeth while preserving its feminine essence. Though uncommon, Lyza appeals to parents seeking a name that feels both familiar and distinctive, with an energetic, modern vibe. Its simplicity makes it easy to spell and pronounce despite its relative rarity.

Traditionally, Ares was the blood-thirsty god of war and son to Zeus and Hera in Greek mythology, and it has been rising up the US charts for boys since 2013, in tune with other mythological names like Athena, Artemis, and Atlas. In Spain, it has been used as a unisex option since the 90s and as such, a number of American girls have been receiving the name in recent years.

In fact, as a Spanish girl name, it has a different origin. Deriving from the Catalan Mare de Déu de les Ares or "Mother of God of the Ares", it is a nod to a sanctuary in Coll d'Ares, a mountain pass in the Pyrenees. Whether this is why American parents are choosing it however is unknown.
