German Names

With Stevie, Scottie, and Charlie on the rise, and Lula, Lucy, Eloise, and Lucia all in style, we're predicting a rise in baby girls called Louie. Fitting the "boyish-nicknames-for-girls" trend, it may additionally be used as a nickname of classic Louisa and Louise.

Actors Jeremy Allen White and Addison Timlin chose Louie as a nickname for their daughter, Dolores Wild, born in 2020, while content creator Chelsea Jennings gave the name to her daughter born in 2026, a sibling to Remi, Madden, and Scotty.

Given to just 17 girls in a recent year (compared to 497 boys), it is a rare option as a given name but perhaps not forever.

Sure, he'd probably get a certain amount of red-nosed teasing around the holiday, but a boy named Rudolph could probably take it. Besides, he's got other, more distinguished namesakes -- the great ballet dancer Nureyev, silent screen Lothario Valentino and 9-11 Mayor Giuliani.
Softening short form Rudy has stood on its own long enough to have been consistently in the Top 1000 for as long as Social Security records have been tallied, while Rudolph has been off for decades. Can it be one of the German names for boysprime for a comeback?
The name was spread in England via the Anthony Hope novel <e,>Prisoner of Zenda, which set the fashion for romantic adventure stories in imaginary Balkan countries in the early 20th century.

This Nordic-sounding name is ripe for wider usage, especially as a fresh alternative to Christian or similar-sounding Carl.

Like Greta, Gretchen is a German Margaret diminutive that has become an American quasi-classic, though not much used today, having dropped off the list in 2009. She was at her high point in the 1970s, making it into the top 200.
Gretchen appears in Goethe's Faust, and has been seen more recently on Heroes and Breaking Bad. The name is currently enjoying a dash of modern glamour via actress Gretchen Mol.

Ferdinand is a traditional name among Spanish royal families and also appears in Shakespeare's The Tempest, borne by the handsome young prince shipwrecked on Prospero's island. Bold, daring, and poetic, it was a popular choice in the US in the 19th and early 20th century, but the 1938 movie Ferdinand the Bull has left it with a lingering clunkiness and it has been out of style since the 80s.

Derived from Fredenandus, Ferdinand is made up of the element nanþa, meaniing "boldness, daring", combined with either friþus or farþa, meaning "peace" and "journey" respectively. As such, the name can mean "bold voyager", "peaceful and bold", or perhaps even "bold but peaceful voyager".

Notable bearers include the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (the first European to cross the Pacific and the first person to circumnavigate the earth) and the racing driver Ferdinand Habsburg, along with various political and royal leaders throughout history.

The sleeker Spanish and Portuguese version Fernando is more popular currently in the US, Spain, Mexico, and Chile, while other international forms include the Dutch Dinand, Catalan Ferran, and Hungarian Nándor.

Sweet but sleek, and distinctive, Liesl is an old German nickname-name for Elisabeth. It might have once seemed inextricably tied to to its country of origin, but now, like Elsa, Enzo, Saoirse, Freya, Soren, and Heidi, it leans more towards being international and European chic.

Many people associate the name with Liesl von Trapp, the eldest daughter in The Sound of Music, who is "Sixteen Going on Seventeen", as her song famously says. Also spelled Liesel, it might additionally be associated with the popular novel, The Book Thief.

Rudy hasn't yet enjoyed the comeback of cousin name Ruby, despite having been chosen by hip couple Sadie Frost and Jude Law, but it still could happen.
Rudy has a lot going for it as a usable-on-its-own nickname name, with the lively 'oo' sound found in Jude and Juno and all the popular Lu-starting names. And it was a heartthrob name back in the day when crooner Rudy (born Hubert) Vallee and Rudy/Rudolph (born Rodolpho) Valentino had ladies swooning, reaching as high as Number 299 in 1926.
It has most often been seen as an all-male name--except for little Rudy on The Cosby Show.

Adel might be considered a spelling variation of Adele, derived from the Germanic element adal meaning "noble", with the final '-e' removed to make it more concise and less girly. Alternatively, it could be an anglicization of the Hungarian form of Adela, usually spelled as Adél.

It also has its roots in Hebrew, combining ad</e> meaning "eternity" with el signifying God, to give the name a very spiritual meaning.

Adel is also used as a masculine name, deriving from Arabic to mean "just and honest" and from the same Germanic element mentioned above, and is used as a standalone name, or as a short form of Adelbert/o.

Historically a diminutive of Wilhelmina, Elma's parent name and soundalike sisters are slowly stirring back to life as the trend for vintage baby names continues. With Alma on the rise in the US, Thelma chic in France, and Selma hot in Scandinavia, Elma could be in with a shot at a revival — especially given the popularity of Emma and Ella. But Muppet Elmo and Looney Tune Elmer Fudd may cast a long shadow.

Many girls' names beginning with Ad- are enjoying newfound popularity, mainly Adelaide, Adeline, and Ada. Adalaide is a spelling that bridges the gap between Ada and Adelaide, which in German come from the same root.

Ever since Allied soldiers in World War I dubbed the enormous German cannon "Big Bertha", this name hasn't worked for a sweet little baby girl. But this was not always so. Hard as it might be to imagine now, Bertha was a Top 100 name until the 1930s, and in the 1880s was the seventh most popular name in the land--the equal of Joseph.
Bertha, aka Berchta, was a Teurtonic goddess borrowed from Norse mythology, regarded in her earliest incarnations as a beautiful and benevolent spirit. Bertha is an ancient Germanic name attached to the 6th century Saint Bertha of Kent, who was instrumental in the spread of Christianity, and it was the name of both the mother and daughter of Charlemagne.
In literature, Bertha Mason is the first wife of Rochester in Jane Eyre, and a character in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth. The French version Berthe is represented by the French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot and the neglected daughter in Madame Bovary. All in all, though, modern parents might do better to consider the Polish version, Berta.

This old school German name, more familiar these days as a surname, is a relative of the place name America.

Emmerich

A crystalline name that retains its loveliness far past its prime. Its biggest downside: Eternal confusion over spelling and pronunciation. Kristen? Kirsten? It can be so confusing that many parents today opt to bypass it.

Kristin

One of those pan-European nickname names much more familiar in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe than in the US, though related name Mina is making a comeback here. Light and bright, it could be an alternative to Mila, Minnie, or Millie.

Minna

Traditional German names of this ilk have had a difficult time emigrating into the American name pool, mostly because anti-German sentiment during the two world wars of the 20th century drove German names out of fashion. One of Heinrich's nicknames, Harro, might do better.

Old school Howard has fallen out of fashion in recent years, having been a Top 100 choice in the US from the 1880s until the 1960s. Short form Howie, however, might have more potential, with its distinctive sounds but similarities to choices such as Bowie, Harvey, Hal, Hugh, and Rowdy.

Derived from either the Germanic Hughard meaning "high guardian", the Old Norse Hávarðr meaning "brave heart", or perhaps even the Middle English term for a sheep herder, Howie has never featured in the charts as a stand alone name. A recent year saw it given to 21 boys in the US and just six boys in England and Wales, while Howard was chosen for 226 and 13 respectively.

Rayner was introduced to England by the Normans after the Conquest and has historical significance in medieval Europe. Though uncommon in modern usage, Rayner has seen occasional revivals as parents seek distinctive yet historically grounded names.

Rainer gives it a nature feel while Rainier is both the Prince of Monaco who married actor Grace Kelly and the mountain outside Seattle.
