Asma
Asma Origin and Meaning
Asma is a simple but powerful name, and holds significance in Islamic tradition. Asma was a niece of Muhammad whose refusal to betray her uncle and father helped them escape to Mecca.
A very popular name across the globe, from Pakistan to Morocco, Somaliland to Bangladesh, it is also familiar in France and the UK. One downside is that in English-speaking countries, Asma might be pronounced to sound like asthma, the illness that blocks airways and makes it difficult to breathe, while in Spanish-speaking countries, asma is literally the word for asthma.
The Arabic name, however, is pronounced with a subtle difference, with more of a "mah" sound at the end, and, depending on dialect, more of an "us" than an "AS" sound at the beginning.
