What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever named?
A question over in the forums about naming vehicles inspired this week’s Question of the Week: What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever named?
A car or a cabin?
A dog or a cat….or maybe a pet rat, snake, or lizard? Or maybe you named the squirrels who regularly raid your bird feeder, or the little orange lizards you used to catch and race when you were a kid.
A doll or a stuffed animal? A fictional character, or a body part?
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever named, what did you name it, and why?

A pair of pinecones – who knows why.
on July 29th, 2014 at 12:12 pm
I think the most unusual thing I have ever named was my brother’s pet hamster when I was seven. I named it Hairspray for no reason other than I thought it was a cool name for a hamster.
on July 29th, 2014 at 12:16 pm
A tree, when I was 9. Also, a guitar, several houses, and a few body parts. 😉
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:00 pm
My bike–I named her Poppy. I can’t even use the excuse of being young and silly. I just love my current bike so much, she needed a name. 🙂
I also make a habit of naming a select few house plants, but that’s not weird right?
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:06 pm
My first car was Claire (named by a friend).
My current car is Tanya the Toyota (named by me)

As kids my brother and I thought the apparatus at the dentist looked like the robot from “Short Circuit,” so we named it Robbie (short for “robot”). Later, as an adult, I was fixing up an old apartment and getting a lot of use out of a paint scraper. So much use that I christened it. Of all things I called it Robbie, not even making the connection to that other inanimate object I had named so long ago. I’ve also named a car and countless animals (plush, domesticated, and wild), but what’s so unusual about that?
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:15 pm
My dog is named Latte (which people think is the cutest thing! :P)
I had a cat named Buttercup after the Powerpuff Girls.
I named my stuffed animals as a kid, I remember them being Rita, Sassy, Corie, Scruffy, etc. hahahaha
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:23 pm
My childhood invisible friend: Vincent. He didn’t look like a Vincent, though. My childhood pretend boyfriend: Greg Zimmerman. A friend’s last name was Zimmerman and I remember wishing that it was mine, too. Apparently, I considered becoming Mrs. Greg Zimmerman. Laptop: Thelma. The name of a resident in the nursing home where I worked was Thelma. She was quite a memorable person. Another laptop: Odis. This was the first name that came to mind. I wished I spelled it Otis. First car: Agnes. I wanted to give my car an obnoxious name. However, I don’t consider Agnes to be annoying now. Also, the names I gave to all of my daughter’s stuffed animals are all names that I considered using for her.

We have an imaginary fourth roommate in our apartment who always leaves the common areas a mess. We call this mysterious presence Lisa, as in “Lisa left her dirty dishes on the coffee table again!” and “Lisa tracked mud everywhere again!” Joking aside, Lisa’s actually been great for the house. She’s a way we can voice frustration over domestic issues without laying blame and polluting the emotional atmosphere of our shared space.

I name my small appliances because my mom has this ancient Sunbeam Oskar food processor and growing up we always talked about having to get Oskar out to chop something. So my Kitchenaid stand mixer is named Clive because I wanted him to have a sexy chef name. My handmixer is name Lloyd after Frank Llyod Wright because it is a Kitchenaid Architect series (and apparently I don’t know the name of many architects). I have a blanket that I always use that DH and I call NiNi because a girl on Toddlers and Tiaras called her pacifier NiNi. And my car is named McSpeedy since I bought it during the height of Grey’s Anatomy’s popularity.
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:41 pm
I didn’t name it, but my mom named our (usually) indoor tree Herbert.
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:41 pm
I have named every car I’ve owned and my son’s stuffed animals. One day, when he is old enough to talk he can rename them if he likes.
Winston (the T-Rex)
Bertrand (teddy bear)
Augustus (teddy bear)
I also had two eggs I had to take care of for a school project in the 6th grade, twins I named Eggbert and Egglizabeth.
on July 29th, 2014 at 11:50 pm
My husband and I named our GPS “Iris” after a forgetful family member (our GPS is really glitchy and forgets where we’re going every once in a while). Recently, I realized that “Iris” is “Siri” backwards, and we debated whether or not Apple is spying on us and stealing our ideas.
We also named our car Gutgrinder after an episode of Adventure Time.
There’s a horse ranch down the road from us, and they have a beautiful blonde horse that I call Haldir, after the Lord of the Rings character.
on July 30th, 2014 at 1:43 am
The oddest thing I’ve named is a set of discuses from Track and Field when I was in high school. There were three colors; yellow, pink, and black, and everybody had their favorite color, so to differentiate the pink ones were called Carmen, the yellow Florence and the black Albert/Alfred (we could never remember which).
Also, when I was little I named every ladybug I saw either Tarzan or Jane (alternating) and every fly Zippy, after a girl I knew. She wasn’t even remotely like a fly, but I thought the name was cool and appropriate.
on July 30th, 2014 at 2:36 am
I name my appliances haha! Clarence the oven, Nova the sewing machine, Egbert the fridge and so on!
on July 30th, 2014 at 2:36 am
I named my bike Firebolt. I also remember one of my friends naming her shoes and stationery.
on July 30th, 2014 at 3:20 am
I had two imaginary friends when I was little. One was a boy, and one was a girl. Their names were Mike and Oval. Mike was the girl.
on July 30th, 2014 at 3:33 am
My sister had a terrible eye infection a year or so ago that caused her to form a lump on her lower eye lid that remained there for so long we decided to name it Larry. Not sure why Larry, but we still refer to him today, saying sometimes “Oh, I hope Larry doesn’t come back”!
on July 30th, 2014 at 4:26 am
an umbrella called Bertie/Bertram, me and my bf went to Queensland for a friends wedding and it starting to pour down when we found a blue umbrella at a bus stop, we named him Bertram, unfortuantly he broke.
I named the dog downstairs Rufus, my stuffed toy Humphrey Danger Storm, an owl shaped cushion is Owlington Snow. I’ve also named random piegons (Percy, Henry and Pirate Private Pete) and we recently have a spider in the bathroom called Baz who we think might of been eaten by Lavinia the living room spider.
on July 30th, 2014 at 5:48 am
These are HILARIOUS. So many things I’ve never even dreamed of naming — an eye cyst! a GPS! @Augusta_lee, I think “Lisa” is brilliant; she could go far to bringing peace and order to any household.
on July 30th, 2014 at 6:26 am
I called my viola (the instrument) Viola (how original) and my flute was Felix (Fee). My nicknames for my younger siblings are a little off the wall – Lizamabobs for Lizzy and Mikewoz for Michael. I came up with those so long ago that I don’t remember their origin stories. My little sister is much better with weird names – named her favorite doll Sallybeigen (who knows what that means) and our cat is called Swussy (a combo of soft and fuzzy, I believe, but it kind sounds…uh..malapropos). I named my sister’s first car Snuffleupagus after Mr. S from Sesame Street. I don’t know why. The car was neither big or brown.
on July 30th, 2014 at 7:11 am
My car’s name is Irene and my bike’s name is Belle, but I think the weirdest thing I’ve ever named is an umbrella. I have this umbrella from a rum company called “The Kraken” and it’s literally an umbrella with a kraken on the inside and a tentacle for a handle so I named it Squidward.
on July 30th, 2014 at 7:23 am
I had three turtles and their names were Moshe (the snapping turtle), Dvora, and Eleazar (spotted turtles). Also, we would name my sister’s rocking horse after the Kentucky Derby winner every year. As for fictional characters, I’m a writer. I name characters all the time. I guess the current most unusual one is a Jewish Betazoid psychiatrist named Alasdair Gidon McBride (Sandy).
on July 30th, 2014 at 7:46 am
My cars have been
LuLu, my hand me down 1996 buick from my grandfather, she reminded me of a little old lady
Kitty, my current 09 Toyota that my nephew said Purred like a Kitten
Shirley, my cousins 1999 Ford, (again a little old lady)
My Dolls growing up were
Kris (she was named for my sister Krissy lol)
And twins named Timmy and Tammy (Timothy Ro and Tamaska Jo)
George, Betty Sue, Flutterbudget, Alexander , Sophia, Calliope
And my Barbie dolls and Ken were never called Barbie or Ken
My Ken was Michael and my Barbies were Jessica or Elizabeth depending on which one I used as my main one, one with shoulder length hair or one with longer hair lol, and their friends ran the wide variety from Ameretti, Cassandra, Obediah, Amanda and Veronica (Roni) that I can remember.
on July 30th, 2014 at 7:47 am
Oh, and I call my GPS Jill, because she is annoying and it was the most annoying name I could think of that day.
I have a neck massager thing I call Philip, and a Flashlight named Fred (because it is Black and has a siren attached and for some reason made me think of Sanford and Sons haha)
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:05 am
Well, when I was little I named each of my feet, I’m sure I did it to be silly, but they were named Kelsey and Jessica lol
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:41 am
I named my phone charger Ricardo, because I name all of my electronics. Camera was Cammy (how creative), laptop was Lisbeth, phone was first Oksana then I had to get it replaced so it became Priscilla. I also call my dog all sorts of things. His name is Duncan but I’ve called him Rhonda, Fernando, Patricia, and Hat Factory.
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:49 am
I remember a while back, one of my friends had to get crutches. We then dubbed them Raphael and Bob.
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:00 am
A crow which was called Margaret after my great aunt because it would let all the little birds eat before it did and it reminded me of the kindness she displayed.
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:27 am
My dogs are Daisy Jo Holmes & Bella Nina McCartt
My phone is Vivian Dell Holmes.
My computer is Acacia Joy Holmes
My car is Charlotte Hyundai Holmes “Charlie”
And I usually always name my bowling balls whenever I go bowling.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:10 am
The weirdest thing I think I have ever named would be that when I was younger I used to name all of my pants. Why? So I could label in my drawers where they were supposed to go. I don’t remember all of the names but I recall that I called a grey pair of sweatpants Heather, a purple pair of sweats named Lavender, a red pair named Scarlet, and I think I named another pair of pants were named Dove but I don’t know what color they were.
My mom used to name the fans at a place we volunteered at when they had a tendency to get in the way. One was Max, he got in the way a lot. The other was June, I don’t think she was in the way a lot so she was the favorite.
Of course my mother also named the cars. Tonya Toyota and Susie Suburu.
We also named all of my sisters play mobile people when we were children. there was a set of play-mobile siblings named Lydia and Louisa. (those were me and my other sisters middles) There was another set of siblings named Leo, Leeann, Liam, and Lisa(they all had the syllable Lee in their firsts.) They were the Lee family.
Of course we named our dolls growing up. Some names I used for dolls included
Rose (for a pink teddy bear)
Rosa (another bear in a dress and turban)
Dog (I was two at most, and he was a dog)
Goldie-pad (a gold stuffed kitten. Couldn’t chose between Lily pad and Goldielocks so I combined the two)
Celestial (a stuffed unicorn)
Captain cheese (a nick name for a stuffed mouse. can not remember what his original name was. I think it might of been Max.)
Orchid (a stuffed Chihuahua)
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:11 am
As a kid, I named a squirrel Camo, because he seemed to think he could blend into anything just by flattening himself against it.
My first car was Veronica.
My current car is Daphne Pixie.
I named my GPS Debra, and we now, call every GPS Debra. They just sound like a Debra.
My first computer was called Stupid.
My current computer is Dragon.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:13 am
My phone is called Luke.
I have an owl cushion called Bertie.
I name my Christmas tree every year, last year it was Ingrid and this year I think it’s between Harold and Geraldine.
And I am currently trying to think of a name for my bike 🙂
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:14 am
I name just about everything.
We have an elephant pepper shaker that broke–but I loved him so much, I glued him back together and named him Pepper Pachyderm.
My first car, a Ford Explorer, was named “Splo” after an interaction with a stranger in a parking lot.
We had a Honda CR-V named Pearl.
Our Honda Fit is named Evelyn.
I’ve had two cruiser bikes–one was Sadie, the most recent is Greta.
My smart phone, an Android, is named Iris–partly because of her purple case, partly because she’s the opposite of Siri.
In my family, there has also been Scladey the Escalade, Pony the Mustang, Grey Goose (a grey sedan), Cupcake the VW Bug, Miss Howard the Jeep, Celeste the cruiser bike (twin sister to Greta), and Rudy the porcelain rooster.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:16 am
Oh, I also had a stuffed orange dinosaur named Marmalade and a really ugly stuffed doll named Peggy.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:22 am
I named my adorable red Ford Escape Ginger because it was my first brand new car. When we take her off-roading she gets little “freckles”.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:26 am
I think the weirdest thing I’ve ever named were the family cars. We have a Chevy Equinox that we jokingly call QuiQui. I don’t know how to write that in pronunciation. My Chevy Malibu is Pearl, because she’s a pearl white color and dainty (takes her forever to pick up speed!). My mom had an ugly green car that she called the Green Hornet, which eventually got shortened to Hornet (and, despite my cousin’s attempts, NOT Horny).
I’ve never had strange dog names, but my absolute favorites was Max, a white German Shepherd who could jump over our six foot wooden fence like nothing, and Sammy, a gorgeously sweet Lab mix that nearly killed me when he got lost.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:51 am
When I was five, I named a giant stuffed animal T. rex Vile, short for Violin. My current (red) bike is Robin. I named my art teacher’s pet cockroach Gustav, because it suits him so well. My mom’s Lexus was Lexi. I have named various medicines so that they sound less unappealing (I have taken pills called Priscilla before).
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:54 am
When I was a kid I had a stuffed killer whale that I named Shampoo (obviously after Shamu, the famous killer whale at Sea World).
Incidentally, all the dogs is my extended family have names that start with the letter B. We’ve had Bell, Boone, Bandy, Bowzzer, Boo Boo, Bailey, Buck, BB, Bradley, and Boss.
on July 30th, 2014 at 10:56 am
Oh, I also named a U-Haul trailer Liberty, two lego people Henry and Olivia (I was clearly ahead of the curve on this one), and a dogwood tree Louis.
on July 30th, 2014 at 11:05 am
Oh! Also, when my oldest daughter was 2 or 3, she had a little plastic nativity set. She always played with 2 of the 3 wise men and named them Torbo and Buck Dorsey. I have no idea where she came up with those names.
on July 30th, 2014 at 11:49 am
My baby doll was named Bop after Baby Bop from Barney. I also named my mom’s first car that I can remember Bluey and it was a blue Lexus.
on July 30th, 2014 at 11:53 am
Rosaries – when I made my first Communion, I got about seven rosaries as gifts. Not knowing what else to do with so many, I named them all after saints/biblical characters. Now, I have James, Matthew, Ruth, Hannah, Zachariah, Anne, John, Rose, Theresa, and Adam. I use them to pray to that particular saint sometimes, even though all rosary prayers technically go to Mary.
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:01 pm
I named my tape dispenser Britta. My iPod is Nia Cairistiona Eponine, my iPhone is Ezri, my computers are Aragorn Enjolras and Ophelia Yorick. My family’s three cars are Lucy, Ruby, and Teddy (I love the -y theme). The three toy hedgehogs that sit on my desk are Lewis Abraham, Percival Sebastian, and Matthias Pallum. And oh, there’s so much more.
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:23 pm
Midnightys naming fictional characters for my stories. Here are some of them:
Cayn Flynt (Jezzabelle’s cousin)
DeeLylah Flynt (Jezzabelle’s mother)
Miriam Greenberg (Shoshannah’s mom)
Nathaniel Walker (Jonah’s son)
Olympia Marinos (Georgios’ wife)
Nathan Marinos (their son)
Ariel Kaminski (Judah’s wife)
Levi Kaminski-Novak (their firstborn)
Aaliyah Kaminski-Novak (their second)

Naomi Kaminski-Novak (their youngest)
Avner Kaminski (Ariel’s dad)
Miriam Kaminski (Ariel’s mom)
Some fanfiction made up characters:
Cecile Pegasus (my sister and I made her up)
I named all my stuffed animals and my pets, too.
Pets (past and current):
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:28 pm
We had lots of pets when I was younger. We had gerbils, a guinea pig & pet rats!
So I would say the pet rat was the most unusual. My rat was named Micah. Lol. I don’t like that name now but when I was a kid it was new to me and I thought it was cool. And we had different cats and dogs too. I can’t believe my parents let us have pet rats, ewww. But I thought it was pretty cool at the time! Lol
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:33 pm
my boobs are named ash and pikachu
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:45 pm
Probably the Christmas turkey I named Seamus.
on July 30th, 2014 at 12:58 pm
@augusta_lee, that is brilliant!
on July 30th, 2014 at 1:11 pm
I wanted to name my younger brother, VonDutch. One word. I also have a friend who was named by his sister after her now ex-boyfriend.
on July 30th, 2014 at 1:11 pm
Von Dutch is a clothing brand.
on July 30th, 2014 at 1:14 pm
My cars were Evy (from the license plate, EYV) and Sterling, who tried to kill me…(long story)
My french horn was Ijori, after a prince in my favorite book. My piano I was less creative with-Everett, the brand. My guitar’s Sienna, but I never use it. I don’t like it.
My bike (my current main form of transportation) was Emerald “Emmy” because she’s bright green and royal blue, but after watching Doctor Who and noticing that my gears make kind of a TARDIS sound when they’re not fully engaged, I changed it to TARDIS “Tari” for short…my friend pointed out that I could’ve named her Idris…but I didn’t think of that. So Tari it is.
And obviously characters…as a writer, it happens. Some meaningful favorites:
Halyn Ilori Mugarson (last name is from Muga)
And some that just sound awesome:
Cordelia Juliet Larkin
Nathaniel Romeo Hawking
Contenza Emerald & Jensina Amythest, aka Connie and Jennie, princesses of Taliva
I’ve also had characters named If, Linder, and a girl named Dave.
on July 30th, 2014 at 2:25 pm
The first pet I ever got to name on my own was a cat my husband and I rescued when I was 24. Up until then, all pets had been family pets, and my sister and I had to agree on names – our first family cat was named Victoria because my sister, then three, had a doll named Victoria and refused to call the cat anything else.
So when I was 24, my husband called and said he had found an abandoned kitten at work. How could we not keep him? I named him Atticus after my favorite literary hero. He was rough, annoying, antisocial, and very well-loved until he died last year. We got another new kitten about a month after his death. Her name? Scout 🙂
on July 30th, 2014 at 2:42 pm
I had folders of clothes on my first pc, arranged by colours. Only, yellow was Ashley, pink was Cassie, lilac was Karone, like the power rangers (In Space), red was Catalina, and there were a few others I can’t remember.
In the Bridal Folder (it was a phase!) yellow- Jahida,
Blue was Meri.
There was another folder called Sabrina, but I can’t remember why.
on July 30th, 2014 at 2:47 pm
I have a new cat named Lylah Belle (I didn’t pick the spelling or else I would have gone with Lilah). I also have 3 fish named Huxley Gideon, Fanny-Mae, and Doris (no middle yet) and a shark who remains nameless (can’t come up with something that fits).
I used to have a cat named Mineau (not sure its spelled right), her name was the French word for “Cat”
on July 30th, 2014 at 3:46 pm
I named a snake that lived in my mom’s garden a few years back. I called him Henry because in the movie Flicka there is a garden dwelling snake that the mom calls Henry! That’s the weirdest thing I can think of right now but there is one that my mom did that was funny. There was this little squirrel that lived in my parents barn and he would zoom all over the trees and the sides of the barn. My mom named him Zero because it seemed like he was a zero gravity squirrel. She had to come up with a few other names pretty soon though cause he found a girl and they had babies so then there were five or six “Zero’s” running around.
on July 30th, 2014 at 4:02 pm
My favorite pair of shorts are named Gabrielle…
on July 30th, 2014 at 4:02 pm
on July 30th, 2014 at 4:04 pm
I named my Kitchen Aid stand mixer Gertrude (nn Gerty). When hubby bought me a new stand mixer for Christmas this past year I gave Gerty to my mother and named the new Kitchen Aid stand mixer Beatrice (nn Bea). I also have two cars Muriel and Minerva Pearl both Mazdas. Growing up I named a slew of pets including a hampster named Hampleton, a dog named Dark Sky and a pair of twin pygmy goats Isabella (nn Izzy) and Cleopatra (nn Cleo).
on July 30th, 2014 at 4:55 pm
The most unusual name for anything I have heard recently came from my 2 and 1/2 yr old daughter who named her doll “Effika” and her teddy bear “Hit machine” yep she actually asks mummy where “Hit machine” is sometimes and it is hilarious
on July 30th, 2014 at 5:18 pm
First car: Henry David, third car: Henry David. First stand mixer: Sir Mixalot, second stand mixer: Sir Mixalot II. You have to wonder why I bothered naming these things. A stuffed bear called Mr. Bear, a stuffed bear named Bruce. And then I took far too much time to select creative and thoughtful names for many pets. All reasons I need Nameberry.
on July 30th, 2014 at 5:24 pm
I did name a doll Amalthea because I loved The Last Unicorn so very much… that was pretty bold, but I was never super into playing with dolls. She was special just for having a name.
on July 30th, 2014 at 5:27 pm
I named my computer Chloe when we first got it. The name stuck & now the whole family refers to Chloe when they go online.
on July 30th, 2014 at 5:33 pm
Sorry, hamster not hampster, but his name was Hampleton.
on July 30th, 2014 at 6:05 pm
I named my pet stick insects, there were a lot and we could never tell them apart. A few of the names were Twiglentine, Twix Ta-woo and Stiggy.
Also my friend named my eraser Ishmael and if we’re in class and she wants to borrow it she will ask “Can I borrow Ishmael?”
on July 30th, 2014 at 6:26 pm
Our front door is named Chewbacca. Needless to say, it’s a little creaky.
on July 30th, 2014 at 7:07 pm
The first car I named wasn’t even mine lol. It was a car that I wanted very much, an old red Chevy pickup. I called him Atticus. My real first car was named Curt and my current one is named Mizzy. Very silly.
My childhood stuffed animals all had names too. I had a stuffed piggy that I named Pizza and a white teddy named Benajmin nn Benji.
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:27 pm
When I was ten or so, I named my bicycle “Magma.”
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:56 pm
I name my house plants….I have different species of Ivy and their names are Ivy, Ivrus, Ivan, & Ivanka. Then the Jasmines….obviously, Jasmine & Jasper. I could go on…but I probably shouldn’t.
on July 30th, 2014 at 8:57 pm
Oh and our dishwashers name is Poseidon. lol
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:22 pm
* My friend and I were playing sims before and we were having a race about whose laptop would load faster. Out of nowhere, my friend yells at her computer, “Come on, Angelina!” so I go, “You can do it, Joey!”. So now, when we’re talking about our laptops, we use their “names”. Like, if she wants me to bring my laptop to her place, she’ll tell me to bring and/or not forget “Joey”, and vice versa. It’s quite funny.
* My other friend when she was 12 or maybe 11 noticed a bug and named it “Estelle”.
* Stuffed Animals:
-Haronie (huh-row-nee). I meant to name it Harmony but I spelled it wrong, so I just called her Haronie.
-Kitchikitchiku (yes, that’s where I got my username from)
-Faster – I just thought (and still think) this was the best idea ever.
-Longears & Shortears – I had a stuffed Basset Hound, and he had long ears, thus I named him “Longears”. My sister got a St. Bernard stuffed dog at the same time, and after hearing my name choice she named him “Shortears”.
-Coffee Cat – I had a stuffed cat, and my grandfather kept suggesting the name “Copy Cat”. I had thought he said “Coffee Cat”, and I had no clue why I named him that, but I liked it so I used it.
-Upmax – My sister named a stuffed unicorn Upmax. A combination of the word “up” and “max”. Her favorite name was Max (it was her cat’s name), and she knew how to spell “up”, and so her name was Upmax.
-Hanky – My step-sister has a blanket named Hanky.
-Skinna – My sister made this up. skin-uh.
-Even- Even the pug. Not Evan, ee-vin.
-Fatty Catty – She named a Webkinz cat “Fatty Catty”. And then she got an email saying it was rude to call her cat “Fat”, and Webkinz changed it’s name. I AM NOT JOKING! Funniest thing ever!
I also had a little bear that was like a little statue for decoration. I carried it around everywhere! And it wasn’t soft, either! I cannot remember what I named him which is driving me crazy because I just know it was something weird. If I remember I’ll let you know…
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:25 pm
I keep remembering more! I named a bullfrog tadpole that I caught and kept Ranu, short for Ranunculus Taurus, “bull tadpole” in Latin. Or maybe it means “tadpole bull.” I used Google Translate, so you never know.
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:30 pm
I helped my mother name her yard statues. She thought they were so silly looking that they need silly names to match. I agreed!
on July 30th, 2014 at 9:56 pm
Also would like to add some more…I love this thread!
When I was little, I saw a little ghost girl. We live right by an old, unkept graveyard, (1700s-very early 1900s) and one time I was doing some research on it for fun. I somehow found the list of people that were buried there. One was a little girl named Annie, who died the same age as the girl I saw. One of the people who lived at our house before us (relatives), frequently saw a ghost girl named Annie. She would lead him to the graveyard and stuff, and turn the lights off randomly. However, my father also said he may have been on some drugs at the time, so who knows.
Little things like lights, TV, fan, etc turning on/off still happen randomly. We’re always like, “Must’ve been Annie” or something similar.
My mother’s uncle also passed away in that house, so very rarely we’ll say, “Maybe it was Gene” (honestly TOTALLY blanking on his name right now which is odd for me. I think it was Gene)
My little cousin has a Beta fish named Goldie. It’s not gold. I just found that funny since most fish are named “Goldie” because of their color.
I named a candle once. Forget her name.
My friend and I had an alligator/dinosaur/whatever eraser we named Zelsa. When we were in class we’d always call her Zelsa. “Can I have Zelsa”
The same friend and I had one of those troll things named Gibby. We called him by name just like Zelsa. He mysteriously went missing one day…
Someone I once knew named my dad’s mole. It was like Frank or something.
Every year my mom names our Thanksgiving turkey “Tom”. Tom the Turkey. We now call all turkeys Tom. When we’re cooking it, we’re like, “Tom is going to taste good”, when we’re eating him, “Thank you, Tom!” or “Tom is so good!”, “You cooked Tom well, Ma”…and it goes on.
We had chickens growing up (still do), and I would always name them. I could tell them apart and everything! I can’t remember all their names. I know there was an Angel and a Baby, and something else. Some were named by my sister. I would name the mean ones after people I didn’t like in school (ha!). So I had an Alex and a Madison.
However, we eventually got too many chickens and they all looked alike. They don’t have names anymore.
We were having a cookout at my father’s house not long ago, and my aunt was talking about my friends who were coming, and she asked me, “What are their names? Aphrodite and Pegasus?”. Yep. Aphrodite and Pegasus. They ARE pretty badass, though!
All my pets had pretty normal names. I guess the weirdest is my ferret’s middle name, Bjork.
My sister used to want a Hamster and wanted to name it “Captain Hammy”. She also would always declare she had two turtles living in her stomach. Totally forget their names :/ It was a boy and a girl.
I named a doll Kanei. kuh-nye. My grandmother kept pronouncing her real name wrong, so I just called her Kanei.
I would name everything Lia, when I was little, since it rhymed with my name. Everyone was Lia!
I also have rapid mood swings. I met a spider once, and although I am very frightened by spiders, I was in a mood where I wanted to be nice and everything, since it was a living thing, and I didn’t want to hurt it. So I tried to get over my fear of spiders by naming her. I named her Stacey. However, all of the sudden, I went from “I’m a good person who wouldn’t hurt a fly!” to an anxiety-stricken kid. I freaked out and almost (if not) had a panic attack afraid of the spider. Which, honestly, is very odd since I am not THAT afraid of spiders.
When I was in elementary school, there was a ball that was oddly shaped like an egg, not a ball. So this kid named him Egbert and that’s what him, my friend & I called him ’til the end.

My favorite doll’s name was Betty Go (idk why the “Go” was part of the name)
But the oddest thing I’ve named is my mother’s car when I was younger. She was a mazda and we named her Tina! My friends also had named there cars as well. My friend with a Ford Explored named it Dora (with the other car being Diego), and my other friend had a mini van named Lynette.

I named my pillows Fred and Phil when I was 11. My dad still teases me about it…

My parents name their cars and I once decided on a name for one. We have two cars currently, Bob and Dysnomia. My parents named Bob and my youngest sister Ellie named Dysmonia. You see, Ellie has always had a real fascination with astronomy. She named Dysnomia after one of the moons of Eris. Yeah, I don’t know either.
Before Dysnomia, we had a blue Subaru. We were living in Michigan at the time we bought this car and the license plate holder said “M Go Blue” on the top and then “Ann Arbor Subaru”. Clearly we had to give this car and University of Michigan inspired name! My fourth grade teacher was a HUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEEE Michigan fan and always bragged about her autograph from the old coach, Lloyd Carr. The Subaru was originally named Bo after Bo Schembechler. I told them that they had to name him Lloyd Carr, because, well obvious reasons. They loved it and Lloyd was our car’s name until my mom got into an accident and we got Dysnomia.

Oh, as a joke this year I named one of the walls in a dance room. Mrs. Nanci, my tap teacher, commented that I always dance near that wall and so I said, “Yes, I love Walter.” No, I did not plan to name the wall, Walter because of the pun. I actually chose the first name that came to my head and it happened to be an amazing pun. I’ve also named the floor, Florence; the doors, Doris and Theodore; the mirror, Muriel; the ceiling, Celia; and the barre, Barnaby.

My sewing machine: Constance.

My goodness these responses are spectacular. The pinecones and Lisa, haha. Okay, so weirdest thing I’ve named… When I was younger I named my imaginary friends Piper (g) and Oliver (b). In my freshman year of college I got a huge, blue beanbag chair with a tag on the side that said “Big Joe”. Therefore, once I sat the chair in his position the tag was hidden but I still called him Big Joe until all my friends would refer to him as such. “Come on in. Sit on Big Joe” was a common phrase to be heard in our all-girls dorm. It was even better when the chair started aging and becoming…flaccid. The amount of Viagra jokes were innumerous. Sadly, Big Joe will not be joining the gang in sophomore year.

I get really attached to my mobile phones and I really bond with them and I love them so much I give them first and middle names and sometimes I give them two middle names!

Heather Allison (Huawei Ascend Y300)
Shannen Gloria (Samsung Galaxy S3)

One time we named all my dad’s Apple/electronic devices after my mom joked that they are the other women in his life, haha. His macbook is Eve, his iPhone is Irene, and his TV is Valerie. I don’t remember what we named his two iPads.
I also named my car. It’s a really really old silver Honda CRV, and the previous owner left a Texas A&M sticker on the back windshield for so long that even after I took it off, you can still see the outline of the sticker–so I named her Agnes! Among my friends, there’s a new silver Toyota named Pamela, and navy suburban called Old Blue.

My breasts. I don’t remember their names, but I remember naming them in 8th grade. I was a strange child. Also, I’ve named a piece of scrap aluminum. His name is Irving, and I still have him. I can’t quite decide on a name for my Mac. I was thinking something like Reuben or Roger or even Kohlrabi. I named all my playthings, including My Little Ponies (they were already named, but I came up with new ones) and American Girls. The Bitty Baby I had gotten for my birthday I named Daizee. I knew how to spell, but I thought the kr8tive spelling was cool and hip. I also got one the American Girl horses which I named Frances. I wish I remember the names of My Little Ponies. All of the plants in my organic garden are named. Stiva and Chet are the roma tomatoes. Cedric, Ludvig, and Ira are the heirloom tomatoes. Yves, Amaury, Guy, and Pepin are the self-blanching cabbage. Quenby and Jove are the green beans. Angus, Knut, Quilliam, and Moshe are the parsnips. As you can tell, I spent too many hours thinking of these names.

Forget to add that my friend (who is was also my international student that lived with me for about two years) is from Korea, and I also asked about her parents. But, me being a dumb American who could barely pronounced Korean words, I began calling her dad Bryan. So now, I just ask her how’s Bryan doing. She knows who I’m talking about. Is that weird to name a fifty-year-old man without him knowing? The rest of her family has English names, so I just call them by that. To this day, I still don’t know his name.

Sorry again, but I just remember that we named my friend’s xylophone. It’s name is Xylochadnezzar (like Nebuchadnezzar) because it was a beast of a xylophone. The same friend is nicknamed Sardines… who knows why.

I named out treadmill Dorothy. It has completely stuck, my partner now calls her Dorothy. It must sound strange when one of us says “I’m just gonna go get on Dorothy” I named my laptop Mary, again it completely stuck. Unfortunately Mary has .. passed away (:-( rip) so the new laptop is Virginia, and my partner named her hahaha I was very impressed.

Lol, I just remembered this one. In like third or fourth grade, I named my flash drive (which was also a turtle for some reason) Applesauce. I remember my friend named her cow flash drive Chocolate Milk. At least that one makes sense!

When I was young my sister and I would name random animals we spotted or caught (such as birds, fish, crabs, piglets etc) They usually had stuffy English names. We still do it sometimes but not as much. I named my turtle Poppy, while I named my sister’s beta fish Augustus. I also named our GPS Wanda, we’re on our 3rd generation of Wandas, and I love it. Can you see the pattern? So yeah, I guess I like naming things.

I named my car Stacy, my ribs The Ritas, and I had two imaginary friends as a kid Jenny and Boyson (god knows how the heck I came up with that name)

Do Pokemon count? I name all my Pokemon to make them feel more like individuals rather than just little pixels on a screen. That, and I think it confuses the hell out of people who play competitive if they don’t know my team. I know it confuses me when I get told [Random Name] is being sent out. The first Pokemon I ever named was Walter.

Well, I wanted a dog when I was younger but I got a fish from my uncle. It only had one eye and was a dark blue/black color. I named it Dog! And I collected American Girl Dolls as a kid and they were named Jess, Emily, Julia, Nicki, Julie, Mia, Gwen, Clarissa, and Samantha and the set of Bitty Twins were named after my brother and me, Jamey and Amanda. I also named each of my stuffed animals; some are Blacky, Appa, Purple Turtle, Amanda Bear, Daisy, Lady, etc. I named my viola Violet and clarinet Claire when I was younger too.

In middle school, one of my best friends was riding in our car to my house, and she saw the massive hedge in my front yard and said something like, “That overgrown plant thing is named Steve, isn’t it?”. So now our hedge is named Steve.

I once named my pointe shoes. One was Ricardo, and I don’t remember the other…. I also convinced my mom to name her VW Liesel, because it was German and rhymed with diesel. I’m still trying to find a name for my car, though.
on November 29th, 2014 at 12:43 am
Consuela! My left pointe shoe was named Consuela!

An avacodo pit became Ava Cado, I have no idea why I named the avacado pit. I also named five scrawny little sweet potatoes: Runty, the runt, Queenie, who looked like a scepter, Greenie, who had a sprout shooting out of her head, Normal, who was this perfect little oval normally smooth sweet potato, and Alien, who was a really weird-looking potato, that’s for sure. I took care of them until they rotted. Yes, I do that. Also I had a hamster once a really long time ago and for some reason named him Cheerio.

During my study abroad, there was this absolutely hideous/adorable pigeon that I named Calvin.
There’s a bear that lives in my neighborhood named Merkel (after Angela).

Fave bowling balls I used at the Bowling Alley, I named Brown Sugar & Little Smokey. My car is Pearlie. In college, I had a (herb) pipe carved w an old man’s face that we called Jacob, a tiny rainbow one named Dorothy, and later, a white glass piece called Isis. (Way before Isis was known as anything other than an Egyptian goddess.) Gosh this post has me wanting to go name my appliances!

I got about 7 rosaries for my First Communion. I gave them all Biblical/saint names. James, John, Hannah, Zechariah, Ruth, Anne, and I honestly forget the last one. Later rosaries joined the club as Adam and Theresa.

Lol I already commented on this thread years ago but was scrolling through the blog and forgot I had! It’s great fun reading through these responses though 🙂
on August 31st, 2017 at 3:17 pm
Lol from here too! I think we definitely need to revisit this question — I love you naming your rosaries.
on August 31st, 2017 at 3:18 pm
@jame1881 was Zechariah a weirdo rosary in some way?? He is definitely the outlier!
