Unique Names: I’ve met only one person named….

unique names

The inspiration for today’s question comes from a question on the forums by @avo: What name have you encountered on only one singular person in your entire life?

Chances are this will be an unusual name.

But maybe it’s a more common name that you simply have encountered only once.

What was the name, who was its singular bearer, and what made it such a standout for you?

Dorolyene. An older lady in my childhood. Weird name, nice lady.

Mertes or did she spell it Myrtis? My Great Aunt. I thought it was a cool and weird name as a kid. Not everybody had a Great Aunt Myrt!

My Great Uncle whose full first and middle names were Newel DeArnol. No idea whether either name came from. He went by De and his wife was Beatrice so they went by Uncle De and Aunt Bea.

Ligeia, a woman from my book group, love that name.

Ademir, a lovely young Latino student of mine.

My mom’s old friend, Joetta, and her other old friend, Johnnie May.

Catessa- I’d never heard of this name before, and I’m pretty sure its made-up, but it does sound legitimate. I always want to say Contessa.

Aqualina- A Latin sounding name that could easily blend in with all the Avelina’s and Evelina’s out there. It’s not really my style, but she wore it nicely.

Jonquil- at first I thought it was made up but being the name nerd that I am I looked it up and found it to be quite cheerful!
Ruby- You’d think I would know more since it’s so popular now, but since I don’t know many babies I’ve only met the one and she was really sweet, cute and smart. A true gem you might say!
Camilla- Honestly I didn’t love this name when I saw it on paper but she went by Milly and I had never thought of using that nickname with Camilla before.
Concetta- I still think this sound like some kind of delicious Italian pasta dish, but I can see it’s appeal.

I’m sure I missed a few and oddly I haven’t met many guys with interesting names!

Natrod- My step-dad’s great nephew was named for his late father, Nathaniel Rodney. His mother liked both names, so she used them both. Most people call him Nate.

LuEmma- A friend of my aunt’s, who was named similarly to Natrod. Her dad, Lucas Emmett, passed before she was born, and her mother decided to use both names at once, rather than feminize either.

Two sister named Atrella and Prudence. Only met one of each of those, altho I’ve heard Prudence before but never Atrella. (She was named after a grandmother.)

My grandfather’s middle name was Winfred. Yes, like Winifred without the “i.”

My great-uncle Langston.

A few unfortunate little girls when I worked at a children’s portrait studio: Xzjhaianna (not a typo), Imunique, and Seirra. (Also not a typo. Pronounced like Sierra.)

I’ve only ever known one Sonya. She’s in her late 20s, and she’s made me really like the name. (Pronounced with a long o.)
